On Earth-83, Spirits are unique metaphysical lifeforms that originate from a plane of reality removed from the physical world.

Description[]

Spirits can be found throughout the universe in many different forms. A Spirit begins life as an ethereal blip with no defined form or characteristics, and are completely incapable of interacting with the physical world in this state.

Spirits gain form and power through the collective beliefs of a group of individuals; their appearance, traits, and abilities are defined by collective cultural ideas until they fully mature and become independent entities.

Types[]

Due to the wide variety of spiritual beliefs present throughout the cosmos, there exists a broad spectrum of spirits with different characteristics, abilities, and ranks. Spirits that share common traits are usually placed among categories narrow enough to justify their associations, but open enough to allow for the odd exception here and there.

Creatures[]

While certain mythological creatures are either extant yet unproven cryptids or misinterpreted specimens of a known species, some are in fact fully-realized spirits that exist independently from creatures of the physical world.

Notable Creatures[]

  • Baxbakwalanuxsiwae (Appears in T10R, S2E8)
    • An anthropomorphic or bearlike creature from the folklore of the Kwakwaka’wakw people. His name can be translated in a few different ways, including “Cannibal-at-the-North-End-of-the-World” and “He-Who-First-Ate-Man-at-the-Mouth-of-the-River”. If you hadn't guessed already, he eats people, and his body is covered in bloody mouths that help him do so. His call is "hap, hap, hap" ("eat, eat, eat") in case you needed the point driven in even further.
  • Satori (Appears in T10R, S2E1)
    • Mind-reading monkey-like yōkai from Japanese folklore. It is said that people would meet these creatures while walking along paths or resting in the mountains of Hido and Mino (presently Gifu Prefecture), and upon reading their minds, the creature would say their thoughts out loud faster than any human. Certain accounts tell of them appearing before people at mountain huts and trying to kill and eat them if they have a chance, while others state that they present no danger to people and coexist peacefully with those who work on the mountains. So, you know. Roll of the dice there.
  • Wendigo (Appears in T10R, S2E8)
    • A cannibalistic creature from the folklore of the Algonquin people. The exact details of its nature vary from group to group, but the creature is often depicted as either an anthropomorphic monster or a spirit that has possessed a human being. Associated with cold and famine, wendigos are seen as the embodiment of human greed, and in certain traditions, it is said that humans who have been overpowered by greed or resorted to cannibalism to survive may become wendigos themselves.

Demi-Spirits[]

Demi-Spirits are physical beings that possess some or all of the traits of a Spirit. Certain Spirits are capable of creating Demi-Spirits by either incarnating themselves as a physical being or parenting offspring with an extant physical being.

Notable Demi-Spirits[]

  • Aeoxyns (Briiz, T10R)
    • A ghostly, reclusive species from the planet Oxythita. They inhabit underground cave systems, controlling the underground atmosphere with their mysterious ability to manipulate the weather and using their ethereal bodies to pass through the earth surrounding them with ease.
  • Anima Devorantum (Hallow Fire/Lord Kucorbian, N/A)
    • A skeletal species from the Anur System. They are uncommon, solitary creatures with "Hellfire" that can absorb, burn, or purify spirits and souls.
  • Death Hounds (T10R)
    • Massive, jackal-like creatures with exposed skulls created in ancient Egypt by Xr. Nullamor as one of his first experiments with genetic fusion. Intended for use as effectively immortal war dogs, Death Hounds are aggressive and hostile by nature, but can be reigned in and controlled by their original master, Dethrouge. The only way to permanently dispose of a Death Hound is to consume its flesh, an intentionally strange failsafe implemented into the creatures by Nullamor himself.
  • Daemonians (Spiritualist, T10R)
    • Box-like creatures with ghost-like ethereal bodies from the planet Malum Arca. The Daemonians were created as a collaborative effort between the gods of various planets to act as a containment force for malevolent spirits, being able to trap these spirits within their boxes and summon other spirits for assistance. If their boxes are ever opened after they pass on, any spirits trapped inside will freely be able to escape, resulting in high-security storage of these boxes being mandated after the infamous "Pandora Incident".
  • Geminkai (Castlux, TCC/Gemini, SSI)
    • A half-and-half species divided along the middle from the planet Dualorsa. They exist in a half-immortal state that leaves them able to perceive and walk in the realms of both the living and the dead.
  • Rotoplasts (Spectoring, T10CE)
    • A specter-like species stuck halfway between realms with no extant home planet. They have the ability to generate rings of golden spiritual energy and can freely phase in and out of the physical world.
  • The Void (T10R)
    • A sentient pocket dimension that siphons excess Kunenga Energy from the universe and converts it into Void Energy in order to prevent lifeforms from reaching the Kunenga Threshold and becoming Kunenga Entities. It identifies itself as an insanity demon in reference to the potential side effects of siphoning too much Kunenga Energy from an organism, but officially speaking, it holds no such title and is under the direct supervision of God (see below).

Demons[]

Demons are supernatural beings generally associated with evil. They most commonly serve under a devil and have dominion over certain subjects in and of themselves. In some cases, they can be invoked to assist the summoner in some way, but improper handling of the situation can lead to a variety of negative consequences.

    • Lord of the Flies.

Devils[]

Devils are Spirits of great evil, usually standing in direct opposition to the God or Gods of whichever mythos they originate from.

Notable Devils[]

  • Lucifer (Currently incarnated as Lucius Raivent, TC)
    • Also known as "Satan" or just "The Devil", Lucifer is seen as the biblical devil responsible for the fall of humanity and the torment of mankind. His exact role in the universe varies among sects, but he is generally accepted as the ruler of all evil.

Fae[]

Fae, also known as "fair folk" or "fairies", are minor magical beings whose origin and exact definition vary wildly from culture to culture. They are generally seen as being dangerous and sometimes actively hostile towards humans, ranging from executors of simple mischief to deadly creatures feared in their own right.

Notable Fae[]

  • Dullahan (Appears in T10R, S2E8)
    • An incarnation of the widespread "headless horseman" myth, the Dullahan is a headless rider from Irish folklore that holds his own rotten, grinning head in his arms. It is said to ride on a black horse, using a human spine as a whip and pulling along a wagon adorned with funeral items and human remains. The ancient Irish believed that wherever the Dullahan stops riding, a person is due to die, and the Dullahan will call out their name to draw their soul away from their bodies. Despite its seeming unstoppability, rumors exist that items made of gold can force the Dullahan to disappear.

Gods[]

Gods are supremely powerful spiritual entities that hold dominion over either parts of or the entirety of existence. They are often involved in creation myths to some degree, either as the being/beings responsible for the creation of the universe or descendants/successors of them.

Notable Gods[]

  • God (Mentioned Only)
    • Also known by Elohim, Yahweh, Jehovah, and many other names, God is a typically monotheistic deity depicted as the creator of everything and ultimate force of good throughout most sects of the Abrahamic faiths. His exact nature, ideals, actions, proclamations, and plans have been argued about and fought over for a good chunk of human history, resulting in heavy loss of life. This fractured identity has lead to a self-imposed policy of non-interference with the physical world, as the effects of using such a hotly-debated omnipotent ability could be devastating. In modern times, he serves mostly as an administrative figurehead in Earth's spiritual sphere, and retains authority over certain cosmological phenomena such as The Void.
  • Cardea (T10R)
    • Cardea is the ancient Roman goddess of hinges; door hinges, to be precise, but her authority technically encompasses all hinges either way. Her power over hinges is generally invoked in a metaphorical fashion, giving her the ability to open and close opportunities (AKA "doorways) for people. In modern times she serves as Pluto's assistant, managing his duties as the distributor of wealth while the increasing human population increases his work load as a god of the underworld.
  • Osiris (Mentioned Only)
    • Osiris is the Egyptian Lord of the Underworld and Judge of the Dead. He was originally the Lord of the Earth, serving in this role until he was murdered and hacked apart by his brother Set. His wife Isis eventually recovered and reunited most of his body parts, allowing him to be revived; however, since his penis had been eaten by Oxyrhynchus fish and thus lost forever, he could no longer rule over the living world, and became Lord of the Underworld.
  • Pluto (T10R)
    • Pluto is the Greco-Roman ruler of the underworld. He originally presided over wealth as well, but has primarily left the work to Cardea in light of humanity's massive population increase. Gruff and stern, he has very little patience for anyone except his wife, Persephone, to whom he is a loving and devoted husband. He has gone on record as stating that the myth of Persephone's abduction is mostly defamatory slander spread by her mother Demeter, who disapproved of their marriage in the first place and became outraged after the two eloped.
  • Zeus (Mentioned Only)
    • Zeus is the Greek god of sky and thunder, who ruled as king of the Olympian gods. Famous for killing his father Cronus and infamous for his sexual escapades, he fathered an absolutely ridiculous number of gods and demigods and just about gave his wife Hera an aneurysm in doing so. In modern times, he oversees the duties of the Greco-Roman gods and acts as a manager of sorts. He is generally regarded around the workplace as being a huge pain in the ass.

Souls[]

Souls are spiritual entities born from the consciousness of a sapient physical organism, and are usually only released when their physical bodies expire. Souls can choose to either move on to the afterlife or stick around in the physical plane for whatever reason, though the latter is rare and highly discouraged. If I tried listing everyone with a soul we'd be here all day, so I have instead elected to list people that do not have souls.

Notes[]

  1. Readers with a more limited understanding of mythology may assume that things like the Dullahan being a fairy, Cardea being the goddess of hinges, and Osiris becoming Lord of the Underworld because his penis was eaten by fish are just random details I made up for a joke. Just so we're clear: they are not. Look it up.
  2. Details regarding mythical figures often vary between different groups and cultures. The characteristics of the beings explained here are meant to apply within the context of Earth-83 alone and not act as an authoritative stance on them. It's Ben 10 fanfiction, for God's sake.
