Rook Blonko is a Revonnahgander from Revonnah and one of the main protagonists of Ben 10/Justice League: The Series. One of the last surviving Revonnahganders following the destruction of Revonnah by Vilgax, he was taken in by Tetrax Shard, who later rescued Ben Tennyson. Later becoming a founding member of the Galactic Guardians, he would arrive on Earth with the rest of the team, encountering the Justice League.

Appearance[]

Rook is a tall, vaguely cat-like alien with fur that is primarily periwinkle-blue, with the middle of his face, chest, and stomach having white fur, black stripes along his shoulders, lower arms, waist, and lower legs, and orange eyes.

His Proto-Tech armor is blue and black in color with light grey padding on the lower arms, waist, and lower legs. Rook wears the Proto-Tool mounted on his left shoulder.

History[]

When Rook was only ten, Vilgax, a feared Chimera Sui Genris tyrant, came to Revonnah to conquer the world and take its resources to fuel his empire. When the Revonnahganders stood up to Vilgax, he retaliated by choosing to destroy the planet instead of conquering it. With little options left, Rook Da and Rook Bralla put Rook, their only child, into a pod and sent him into space. Tetrax Shard would later come across this pod and bring it aboard, opening it. Having witnessed the destruction of his homeworld, Petropia, to Vilgax long ago, Tetrax sympathized with Rook's plight and took in the young Revonnahgander, adopting him. Rook would not be alone for long, for Tetrax would later intercept a ship belonging to bounty hunters, and took their unconscious captive from them, a young human named Ben Tennyson who had been similarly orphaned from the deaths of his parents on Earth, and was targeted because he wielded the Omnitrix.

The boy would wake up aboard Tetrax's ship, meeting him and Rook for the first time, and becoming Rook's adoptive brother. And so, the three would travel space together. Tetrax gifted Rook a suit of armor, known as Proto-Tech Armor, and a tool known as the Proto-Tool, which could become any tool its user desires, and trained him on how to fight and survive. Rook, alongside Ben, would also be brought by Tetrax to see Kundo, the only other surviving Revonnahgander, to learn Revonnah Kai. While Rook, Ben, and Tetrax were all good-natured at heart, they were somewhat morally grey, encountering worse individuals than themselves while outside the law.

Events that took place as Rook traveled through space with Ben and Tetrax are mostly unknown, but notable events during this time included meeting fellow outlaw teenagers Kevin Levin and Argit, and teaming up with Mister Miracle and Big Barda to fend off Parademons while escaping Apokolips. As the years went by, Rook, Ben, and Tetrax would meet the Kryptonian Kal-El aka Clark Kent, the hero known as Superman, and save him from the Preserver, this encounter inspiring the two brothers to be something more than outlaws. Both brothers were eventually old enough to go off without Tetrax, and this later led to them encountering Titano, Zeno, and Ester, with all five of them forming the Galactic Guardians. While all five traveled through space together, they met Green Lantern (Hal Jordan) and several other Green Lanterns, among them John Stewart and Guy Gardner, and helped them battle against the Red Lantern Corps, led by Atrocitus, and had a brief conflict with the Thanagarian hero Hawkgirl that was resolved when they fought off Mongul together. They also fought the Yellow Lantern Corps, lead by Sinestro, as well as Maxima, Blackfire, Ma'alefa'ak and his White Martians, Khyber the Huntsman, the Kraang, and the Triceraton Empire. They would later fight the Highbreed over Galvan Prime, in a battle that cost Ben the Omnitrix, leading to Azmuth gifting Ben the Ultimatrix.

One day, the Galactic Guardians were following the Kraang through space, and tracked them to Earth. There, Rook met up with Superman and Hal Jordan again, as well as encountering their teammates, the Justice League, for the first time. Teaming up when they realized they shared the same enemy, Rook, alongside the other Galactic Guardians, agreed to stay on Earth, meeting with Ben's surviving family members for the first time. Rook would go on to join the Justice League along with the other Galactic Guardians, reuniting with Hawkgirl when the Justice League expanded its roster and later starts a relationship with Cissie King-Jones, and start a relationship with Cissie King-Jones, the vigilante Arrowette and a member of the Titans.

Personality[]

Rook is stoic, preferring to think through decisions rather than impulsively acting on them. He tends to follow rules and laws very closely, often ordering enemies in battle to stand down and being cautious when it comes to working with enemies. Over time, Rook has become more adaptable and open to humor, thanks to Ben's influence. He often uses humor to lighten tense situations and bond with his teammates. His journey is marked by his deep loyalty to his friends, strategic brilliance, and evolving personality, shaped by the bonds he forms and the challenges he faces.

Rook tends to be honest to the point of being blunt if he needs to state the truth, not afraid of criticizing close allies if he needs to make a point to them. However, he can also be fairly polite and formal to individuals, typically open-minded, even though he has people he feels impatient toward. Rook avoids using contractions, which are viewed as bad language by Revonnah unless he gets angry enough.

Underneath these traits, Rook feels haunted by the trauma that came from losing his family, though he usually tries to put it aside when the situation calls for it. Although he still holds onto memories of his old family with close regard, he also is very protective of the new family that formed when Tetrax saved him and Ben, which later lead to the formation of the Galactic Guardians. Rook is deeply loyal to his friends and the Galactic Guardians, viewing them as his family. His protective instincts drive him to ensure their safety at all costs.

Powers and Abilities[]

Rook is proficient at using weapons, best demonstrated with his use of the Proto-Tool, regardless of what form it is in. Thus, when the Proto-Tool is in the form of a blaster or sword, he is a skilled marksman and swordsman, also one of the best gunslingers in the universe. In addition, Rook knows martial arts, having been taught Revonnah Kai by Kundo, and basic combat training from Tetrax. Rook has a strong aptitude for using and understanding advanced technology, often serving as the group's tech expert.

Rook has enhanced strength, stronger than the average un-enhanced human, and has shown that he can jump high in the air. He possesses enhanced acrobatics and reflexes, allowing him to dodge swift attacks with maneuvers such as crab-walking and bend his leg over his head.

Taught by Tetrax, Rook is one of the best pilots and drivers in the universe along with Ben, capable of handling various vehicles with precision and skill.

As a master strategist and tactician, Rook excels in planning and executing missions, often devising intricate battle plans and strategies.

Equipment[]

Rook's primary weapon when fighting enemies is the Proto-Tool, gifted to him by Tetrax. The Proto-Tool can be turned into any type of weapon he desires, such as blasters, swords, bows, and grappling hooks.

Rook wears Proto-Tech Armor, an advanced and highly durable suit of armor also provided by Tetrax. It can resist most forms of attack that would easily damage an ordinary human.

Weaknesses[]

Due to having fur, Rook cannot survive for long in hot temperatures.

Trivia[]

  • This is an adaptation of Rook Blonko, with many elements from his portrayal in Ben 10: Omniverse being retained. However, due to the destruction of Revonnah when he was young, he has never been a farmer, and due to the absence of the Plumbers in this continuity, Rook has also never been a Plumber. He also does not possess the Proto-TRUK, due to the Galactic Guardians having their own spaceship to fly around in.
  • Rook's new backstory gives him elements from multiple members of the Guardians of the Galaxy, as portrayed in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with specific elements taken from Drax the Destroyer and Kraglin Obfonteri.
    • Like Drax, Rook is an alien warrior whose family was killed by the actions of a feared conqueror. However, Thanos did not directly carry out the deed in the MCU (although he did in the comics), with Ronan the Accuser doing it instead on his behalf, whereas here, Vilgax personally destroyed Revonnah (and explicitly killed every single Revonnahgander on the planet).
    • Like Kraglin, he shares close ties to a human taken off Earth (Star-Lord / Ben Tennyson) and a morally grey alien (Yondu Udonta / Tetrax Shard). However, while Kraglin's ties to Star-Lord were not as explicit outside of them being somewhat surrogate family and viewing Yondu like a father, Rook is more openly portrayed as a surrogate brother to Ben. His bond with Tetrax is also somewhat softened compared to its inspiration, inviting comparisons between the various Robins and Batman.
  • His backstory as one of the few survivors of a species whose planet was destroyed, only surviving because his family put him in a pod that could be launched off-world for his safety, is similar to the backstory of Superman, only with the planet being destroyed by another individual rather than by natural means (such as an unstable core), being intercepted while still in space rather than landing on another world, and the Revonnahganders do not have access to an alternate dimension such as the Phantom Zone to survive in, ensuring only Rook and Kundo (who was off-world when Vilgax came to Revonnah) are left.
