Rising Tides is the thirty-ninth episode of the series, Mutant Drake.

Plot[]

In the city, with an ocean view, the docks are seen with a relatively empty occupation. The sky is slightly blue with a shade of grey as an orange glare arises from the horizon. Soon enough, the view begins to sink beneath the sea surface and splashes through the murky water. As the view continues to sink underwater, the murky color begins to clear and transition into a dark and deep blue until the view finally stops at the ocean floor. At first, the view is clear of any activity with only sand and rock in sight. A small, mutated creature resembling an eel slithers by, with a skeleton on the outside and flesh on the inside as if it were wearing armor. But as quickly as it had entered the frame, it quickly leaves again. With the focuses clearing up, an encampment can be spotted in the distance from where the view had landed. The scene cuts over to a panning shot of the camp, which had been set up in a clearing on the ocean floor. While it does appear to have been hastily built, the way the materials have been organized and arranged to form a type of shelter could not have been natural. As the scene cuts again, the view shows a closer look at the campgrounds- with armored people moving about, carrying cargo and equipment or conversing with one another. Some of them appear Human with some small mutated features like gills or shark-like eyes while others have a more mutated look, taking on the appearance of a type of aquatic animal like a jellyfish head or a lobster-like body. Some of these people are also working on the camp, welding materials together with their Mutant abilities, and some moving equipment onto mounted Mutant creatures that resemble some kind of aquatic reptile. A muscular looking man with gills finishes working on some equipment and wipes his head in relief. A hand then comes down on his shoulder, causing the man to look over. Once he sees who the hand belongs to, he smiles and nods before returning to work. The hand retracts a moment later and the man it belongs to walks through the camp- looking over at each person working. This man has long black hair and a navy tank top on as he walks over to a tent in the middle of the encampment. The scene cuts to the inside of the tent as the flaps pull open and the man enters. Getting a better view of him, he appears young but his muscles appear to be well-toned, making him appear bigger than he actually may be. He walks over to the table in the center of the tent where another man is already standing there, viewing the carvings on the stone plague resting on top of this table. This other man is much older than the one with long hair and larger in stature. He has grey hair, tied back in a bun and purple eyes. While he is quite muscular, his elbows also protrude outwards- similar to fins. He looks up and over at the man who entered before grunting with affirmation.

Large Man: I see you’ve returned from your patrol. How go the efforts?

Long Haired Man: Fair. They’re putting their work in, I’ll tell you that.

Large Man: Yet you don’t feel like it’s enough.

Long Haired Man: We’ve spent years preparing for this operation and yet the surface world continues to change, forcing us to change our plans as well.

Large Man: You’re worried about the Mutants on the surface that have sworn to protect the Humans.

The initial man looks at the large one for a moment with a grave look before glancing away with a smile.

Long Haired Man: It doesn’t matter. They have no idea what they’re dealing with. I’ll use that element to my advantage. How are our troops, Reggie?

Reggie/Large Man: They’re advancing on the surface as we speak. Of course, they’ll be awaiting your orders once they reach their position.

Long Haired Man: Yes. So, it seems the time for retaliation is here. No more will the surface world reign over us while we sit by and fiddle with our thumbs. No. Today will be the day where I and our underwater brethren will rise and reclaim the world that belongs to us.

Reggie: I am with you, every step of the way, sir. When shall we begin?

Long Haired Man, turning to the view: We advance… now.

As he looks ahead, with a serious glare, his mouth soon twists with a most devious grin.

Title Sequence

The scene continues with a high-up view of the city as it pans from the right to the left, passing over various types of buildings ranging in height. Some of which are under major construction while others are only suffering from minor damages- such as small shops on street level. As the view continues passing over the buildings, an MCA Jumpjet passes by followed by another- as if they were moving in formation. The view finally comes to a rest when it reaches the towering Helper Headquarters building.

Helper Headquarters
March 25, 13:44 EDT

Inside the building, the team is already assembled in the main room with some seated while others are standing, especially Jake and Adam who appear before the others- standing where the screen is located. On the couch, Elias stretches his arms and legs out as he practically lays out during his team meeting. Zara, sitting besides him on the couch, glances over and soon stretches her own feet out, on top of Elias’ lap. He looks out in surprise and turns to her, annoyed, as she gives him a smug smile before returning her attention to the front of the room. Emmett stands, leaning against the wall and he seems to be staring off into space. In the single seats, arranged for this meeting, Danny and Emma are seated next to each other with Danny putting a leg up on the seat so he can lean against it while Emma crosses her legs and leans forward with her hands in her lap. Next to them, on the right, Drake is seated next to Fionna. They both look usually stern with their attention on the two at the front.

Jake: After all the destruction and chaos caused by the Society earlier this week, I think you guys can understand why we had to talk like this… uh today.

Adam: I’ve been going over some data and I realized that a lot of Mutants who were previously either hiding or just keeping their powers to themselves had been ousted due to the riots. This isn’t just people who turned Mutant due to the second Incident though. It also includes Mutants that were freed from the control of the Xyrions. Because of this, I think a lot of them had felt pressured to commit Mutant-related crimes behind our backs. Even the MCA looks like they’re upping their offenses. As if that hadn’t been obvious already thanks to their patrols. However, despite all the trouble they’ve caused, the damages weren’t too bad for the city. We’ll be able to recover soon. But while the chaos is gone, our troubles still aren’t.

Jake: Reeves has finally stepped out of the shadows and decided to take action. Except that action just so happened to be in politics rather than focused directly on us.

Emmett: Yeah, who would’ve seen that coming…

Emmett says this without really looking away.

Jake: Yeah, it’s not exactly good either because now we won’t be able to lay a finger on the guy. At least, not without proving he’s behind this mess first.

Adam: And with the way the city is acting about Mutants right now, I doubt they’ll just listen to what we have to say without evidence.

Jake: So… as it stands, we have no way of proving that he put the Society together, ordered the riots to happen and also caused an explosion that turned people in the city into Mutants. (sigh) But worst of all, we have no idea what he’s planning now that he’s a politician. And considering this is Reeves we’re talking about, the guy who helped out an alien invasion, we need to get on top of this guy before he can act again. Whatever he’s planning is probably not going to be good for any of us… let alone the city.

Adam: So far, all we know is that he’s standing strong against Mutants. He’s been using the chaos that the Society caused to rally up a populous that despises Mutants and spread the word across the city; backing up his ratings. Because of this, more Mutants are being ousted and threatened in public- even those that weren’t involved in the riots…

Fionna: It’s disgusting, that’s what it is. How society can just turn their backs on Mutants like this. Seeing people act this way makes this city feel like how it was before we even formed this team. Where Mutants were just seen as monsters.

Drake: I… have to agree. After all we’ve done, it’s unfair that Mutants should have to be treated this way. At least, those who are innocent like the other citizens. But whether they are innocent or not, it looks like what they are will be what separates them in the people’s eyes.

Fionna: It’s that same feeling that sat within me when I was growing up on my own. We’re lucky to blend in with them. Others I knew were forced into hiding because they simply looked different. But now it seems that Mutants today don’t even get that luxury…

Fionna glances to the side, as if to hide her face. Danny looks over, a small frown on his face, while Emma keeps to herself. Drake’s hand resting on his leg slowly clenches into a fist as a slightly frustrated grunt escapes him.

Drake: This unfairness has to end. Until then, I think it’s our job to make sure these people get the help they need. We can’t save the city if the people inside it are tearing themselves apart over these types of things.

Jake: Of course, I agree with you but it’s like I said, this is a political matter now and that’s just outside of our area. There isn’t much we can do.

The room is silent for a moment as Jake takes a moment to gather himself. Emma looks from left to right at her fellow teammates and hesitantly raises her hand.

Emma: Um… well, excuse me. I uh- had a question.

Jake looks over, slightly caught off-guard by Emma’s etiquette.

Jake: Uh. Y-yeah, sure. Go ahead, Emma. You’re a part of this team like the rest of us, you can talk whenever you need to.

Emma: Thanks. I appreciate that, leader. Well, it’s just- I don’t know too much about politics or even Mutants but couldn’t there- what I mean is: If this Reeves character is taking a stand against Mutants which is causing problems for us then couldn’t there be someone who could take a stand for Mutants to go against him? Someone that could represent them and show everyone that there are good qualities in Human Mutants or even people who were given Mutant properties from the explosion.

Fionna: ...That’s actually not a bad idea. If we can get someone to show that Mutants aren’t so bad, then people just might be willing to give them a fighting chance to prove themselves.

Drake: It might also help break the influence that Reeves has on the people in the city.

Jake: Well, yeah, that’s a good idea but that still leaves one question. Who’s going to represent them?

Adam: Well, you represent the team. Maybe you should represent the Mutants.

Jake: M-Me?! Er- I mean. That might be a bit too much responsibility on top of being team leader. Besides, I don’t think it should be me.

Adam: Huh? Why not? You seem pretty capable.

Jake: It’s… not that. I’m a Human, through and through. I just don’t think it should be fair for me or any other Human to speak for them as a species. If Mutants need to be represented then it should be done through someone who knows and understands what they feel personally.

Fionna: Hey, don’t be so harsh on yourself, man. You’re the leader of the Helpers, you’ve worked with us, Mutants. You’re just as much one of us.

Jake: Thanks but you’re strong enough to represent yourselves. You don’t need a Human like me doing it.

Fionna scoffs with a smile but then nods subtly at Jake.

Danny: So, at the end of the day, it has to be one of us. Well, I’m just gonna say that it can’t be me. I mean, politics? Me? Pft, way too much for me to handle. Besides, I’m sure you need a full-on education to be a representative or whatever.

Fionna: Oh yeah, that’s right. You dropped out of school, didn’t you?

Danny: No need to bring that up when everyone else is present, Miss Homeschooled.

Fionna: To be fair, I doubt you were going to get recommended anyway.

Danny: That… is fair. But what about you?

Fionna: Wait, huh?

Danny: Yeah, I mean you should’ve been our top candidate from the beginning. You’re the only one here who is super passionate about protecting Mutants and saving their good name.

Fionna: Watch it.

Danny: No, really. I’m serious. You’re so into that stuff. You know what you’re doing and what you’re talking about. If anyone should be able to stand up for Mutants who can’t speak for themselves then it should definitely be you. (beat) I mean… that’s what I think, anyways.

His tone throughout was bold but it started to trail off as sheepish towards the end. Fionna looks at Danny with widened eyes and turns away, her cheeks turning a slight red as she fiddles with her hair.

Fionna: I mean… you’re not wrong. (toughening up) As much as I hate to admit it, you have a point. But I can’t.

Drake: How come?

Fionna: Well, I know that I’ve spoken for Mutants before but I only really did it as a way of protecting them. Not representing them. If anything, I was usually the one who disobeyed Mother’s guidance by going outside of Secret City to protect Mutants from harm. To stand up for others and do what I think is right. Basically… what I’m doing now with you guys. And if it’s all the same with you, I’d like to keep doing that. I don’t want this to change who I am. So yeah, speaking on behalf of all Mutants- (sigh) maybe… maybe I’m just not good enough for it.

Danny: Fionna, seriously?

Fionna: Yeah. Seriously.

Danny, to himself: Dude…

Fionna: Look, if not me then the best next person would be Drake.

Drake: Me?

Fionna: Yeah. I saw the way you talked to the people during those riots. About becoming better. Plus isn’t that just your thing?

Drake: My… thing?

Fionna: You reach out and help people. You know how to reach both sides, Man and Mutant. This team is proof enough.

Drake: What you’re asking me to be… sounds like something I’m not. I’m the Vigilante. I put on a hood and jump off rooftops to beat down people who do bad things. I don’t think that’s something people should be inspired by. The city should look up to someone who knows what they’re talking about, who knows Mutants as well as themselves.

Emmett looks over at Drake as he finishes speaking then looks aside, with a look of contemplation. Elias scoffs and throws his arms behind his head as he leans back more into the couch.

Elias: Man, if you guys are going to be so indecisive about this then I’ll just do it.

Emma: Could you possibly take this more seriously?

Elias, throwing his hands up: I am taking this seriously! What? You don’t think I can do it.

Emma: I don’t know, do you want me to answer that honestly?

A couple of chuckles come off of some of the members like Danny and Zara. But other members are still contemplating the discussion like Drake and Emmett; some more intently than others. The discussion is then cut short when an alarm sounds throughout the room, grabbing everyone’s attention. Jake looks up with wide eyes then turns to Adam.

Jake: What’s the situation, Adam?

Adam quickly reaches for his laptop and pulls up something on the main screen; a map of the city area.

Adam: Checking the sensors. Hacking into surveillance equipment, I should have a pretty good look over the city as I’m sure you know but these frequencies… I’m not quite sure where they’re coming from.

Jake: But there is trouble, right? The alarm did… alarm us.

Adam: No clue but I just focused on one sensor in particular and it’s picking up something by the shorelines.

Jake: Shorelines? What is it? A Mutant?

Adam: Like I said, I can’t tell. As far as I know it could be a rogue frequency or maybe a giant sea monster Mutant. Although, I guess that last one is probably unlikely.

Drake: No, not really. I’ve seen that before.

Adam: Seriously? There are just so many stories you’re not telling us.

Jake: We can talk about it later before anyone gets hurt.

Drake: Right.

Adam: Yeah, right…

The team starts to head out before the scene cuts over to the shoreline. The Jumpjet flies over and hovers down carefully on the bank. Jake, now in costume, looks down outside of the window, while piloting the vehicle. He sees another vehicle, that looks like some kind of submarine made from different metallic parts; it’s rested against the edge of the land with its rear still in the water. Soon, the Jumpjet lands and the back door opens up, with the team stepping out.

Defender: Be careful, I haven’t seen any signs of life so keep your eyes open. I’ll be in the air, checking out the area.

Defender flies upwards with Velocity adjusting his goggles.

Velocity: Guess I’d better join him. Be back before you know it.

And with that Velocity races off, leaving behind only a fading blue blur.

Caliber: Looks like we’ve got something over here.

Drake and Fionna glance over and look at Caliber, who is making his way over to the submarine.

Emma: What part about being careful did you not understand?

Caliber: I’m durable enough.

Emma: And everyone else?

Caliber: Oh. Yeah.

Drake: Jake saw it from the window. Looks like a vehicle.

Caliber: Some kind of car?

Emma: It’s not a car if it’s on the water, Elias.

Caliber: That’s Caliber, Miss Smartypants. We have code names for a reason.

Emma: Sorry.

Ember: It’s fine. It doesn’t seem like anyone’s around this time. Just be careful in the future.

Caliber makes a teasing face at Emma who pouts in response.

Ember: What do you think it is?

Emma: Well, I don’t have too much experience in this area but I believe it might be a submarine.

Vigilante: A… submarine?

Emma: Yes, it’s a vehicle that can travel underwater. They were mostly used by the Navy before- well- everything happened.

Vigilante, stroking his chin: First a spaceship, now a submarine…

He speaks to himself in a hushed tone, as if contemplating the concept. Caliber speaks as if responding to Emma’s explanation.

Caliber: I- I knew that! But anyway, what’s this hunk of junk even doing here? I can’t imagine people wanna go swimming in a tin can nowadays.

Emma: Well, submarines do need a pilot. So someone must be around here. Although, I’m not sure who would be driving one of these in the post-apocalypse.

Caliber: Maybe someone’s trying to escape the city.

Emma: Why would they do that?

Caliber: I don’t know! I’m just throwing out suggestions. I don’t see you coming up with anything.

As they bicker, Ember approaches the submarine-vehicle. The conversation around her seems to dull as her focus becomes intent on the vehicle. She looks at the ship with an expression that reads like she’s feeling something from it. The Vigilante looks off to the side, as if not too interested in the conversation to begin with. It’s then when he catches a glance at Ember and sees her approaching the submarine. She reaches her hand out slowly and places her hand on the exterior. A faint voice calls out to her in her mind as the area around her seems to darken. A hand then comes down on Ember’s shoulder and causes her to flinch, snapping her out of his little phase. She quickly turns around and sees the Vigilante looking at her, reeling his hand back.

Vigilante: Are you okay? Is… something wrong?

Ember: It’s this ship. There’s something… I sense something about it.

Vigilante: You sensed?

Ember: I don’t know, man. It’s just a feeling. Like a feeling that I’ve felt before…

Ember thinks about it for a moment before an explosion is heard going off somewhere else. She looks up in surprise and turns her head, seeing smoke rising up in the distance. The scene cuts, showing the four of them looking over at the smoke, including Leviathan and Zara who were previously monitoring the area around the submarine.

Caliber: What the heck was that?

Leviathan: Sounds like trouble, as usual.

He reaches for his comms and activates them.

Leviathan: Defender? Velocity? We heard something that sounded like an explosion. Do you guys have anything?

Defender, over the comms: Yeah… uh you might wanna get over here. We may have found the source.

Caliber, rushing over: Don’t worry, we’re on our way!

He stops besides Leviathan and looks over at the smoke in the distance once again. He has a slightly nervous expression on his face before Leviathan looks over at him with a smile.

Leviathan: Need a lift?

Caliber: (sigh) F-Fine… But just don’t hold me too much, alright?

Leviathan: This isn’t exactly comfortable for me either, y’know.

Leviathan grabs him by the waist and bends his knees before lifting off. The two of them shoot into the air as Leviathan leaps over the ridge and out of the sight with Caliber. Zara is already making a move with the Vigilante not far behind. However, he stops suddenly and turns around to Ember, who turned his attention back to the submarine.

Vigilante: Hey, are you coming?

Ember: Yeah, I just… I just need a minute here. It’s this feeling, Drake… it’s just- so strange.

Vigilante looks to the side, a little frustrated before turning back to Ember, quickly.

Vigilante: We can talk about it later. I’ll… I’ll see you then.

He turns, looks back and shakes his head, moving ahead once again. Fionna continues touching the exterior of the submarine, as if not even paying mind to the Vigilante’s words; only focusing on this feeling she had felt before. The Vigilante, in the background now, forms a pair of Stealth Wings and flies off while Ember leans in closer to the submarine.

Ember, in a soft voice: I’ve… felt it before… but where? What… is this?

The scene cuts once more to the streets of the city where the longed haired man in the blue trench coat stands, flipping over a car with one arm and causes it to soar down the street before crashing.

Long Haired Man: Hear me, surface world! I demand you hear me and show me your leader!

Defender, unseen: If you wanted to talk-

The long haired man looks up and sees Defender hovering down, with his arms crossed.

Defender: -you should’ve just asked.

Long Haired Man: You… You’re not Human, are you?

Defender: Actually, I am.

Long Haired Man: But your power… is not from this world.

Defender: What are you doing here?

Long Haired Man: I’ve come to announce my arrival. And challenge all who stand in my way.

Defender: You could’ve announced it a little more quieter. People might be a little threatened by a Mutant making a mess.

The man turns his head and sees Velocity standing ready across from him.

Long Haired Man, turning his back to them: You should leave. Before this gets any messier.

Defender, landing onto the street: This doesn’t have to end in a fight.

The man looks up with a crazed look in his eyes and quickly turns to face Defender.

Long Haired Man: Like there was any other option to begin with!

He goes straight for Defender and strikes him fast and hard, knocking him back with immense strength. Defender tumbles through the air and uses his energy device to stabilize himself in mid-flight. Velocity looks over in surprise and quickly rushes him, knocking him back. The Long Haired Man brushes it off and looks around, seeing Velocity speeding around him in a circle. He squints his eyes and closes them. Soon, Velocity speeds out of the circle and makes a beeline for the long haired man. However, the man squats down and sweep kicks Velocity, knocking him off his feet and onto the ground.

Velocity: Argh!

The long haired man grabs him by the jacket and lifts him up. He also lifts his fist as if he’s ready to strike him down when he’s abruptly blasted away by an energy bolt. The man tumbles against the street and looks up, seeing Defender flying towards him. The long haired man then jumps up and knocks him into a building with a full on roundhouse kick. Defender holds his head as he leans up.

Long Haired Man: Stay down. This fight is over.

Leviathan, unseen: Not yet it isn’t.

He turns his head and sees Leviathan drop down onto the street, cracking it beneath him as he lets Caliber go. Caliber steadies himself and then readies himself. Leviathan turns his head and goes to help Defender up onto his feet. He makes eye contact with the long haired man while talking with Defender.

Leviathan: You alright?

Defender: Yeah, this guy packs a punch.

Caliber: Yeah? Well, so do I.

He charges for the long haired man, readying a punch. He throws it out and the long haired man catches it. Caliber looks ahead with wide eyes. The long haired man then pulls his arm back behind his back. Leviathan leaves Defender and charges ahead to assist Caliber but the long haired man throws Caliber into Leviathan. Leviathan is caught off guard and gets knocked back but not especially too far away. He also manages to quickly get hold of Caliber as well. This time, the Vigilante drops down onto a lamp post and looks down at the long haired man- reforming his wing form.

Vigilante, in a hard tone: That’s enough. I don’t know who you are but you are going to surrender.

Long haired man: You think you can make demands on me, fool?

Vigilante: It’s not a command… it’s a promise.

The long haired man becomes infuriated and dashes for the lamp post, gripping into it with his strength and starts bringing it down to the ground. The Vigilante kicks off the head of the lamp post and backflips over the crashing pole. He then activates his Electro-Icer form and strikes down against the man’s head. Despite this, the man seems to push it away like it was nothing. The Vigilante is surprised but the long haired man, clearly affected by the hit, grabs the Vigilante’s arm and throws him aside with such force. The Vigilante skids across the street and looks straight ahead as he uses his foot to come to a stop. The long haired man looks up with anger as he shakily readies his fists.

Long haired man: I am going to show you the full intent of my power!

Vigilante: You should have just started with that already!

The two rush ahead, with the Vigilante having to kick off from the street. With the two of them charging at one another, the Vigilante readies his fist as if he’s about to summon another one of his forms. However, the long haired man does something similar, extending his hands open as a type of fluid produces from his palms. The fluid then grows more mass, taking on the form of water-like structures. The Vigilante looks down at them in surprise and attempts to stop mid-charge. However, already being so close, the long haired man raises his arm and lashes the Vigilante across his entire body with a water whip. The Vigilante is knocked back, down onto the street. He looks up and holds his side. He looks down at his glove and sees how wet it is. He then clenches it into a fist and looks up at the long haired man with a cautious wince. The long haired man bears his teeth and rushes towards the fallen Vigilante, readying another whip attack when a ball of fire strikes down coming between him and the Vigilante. The long haired man turns his head and sees Ember walking down the street, holding out his hand with an open flame dancing on her palm.

Ember: Just give it up, water guy. You’re outmatched.

The long haired man catches his breath as he looks at her but his breath slows as he begins to squint as her. He soon starts to take a few steps ahead, looking at her more closely. Ember stands her ground and now points his hand towards him.

Ember: I mean it. Don’t move.

He holds the side of his head as if feeling something coming on and slowly opens his eyes to look at her once more.

Long Haired Man: I’m sorry, but… do I… know you?

She stops and her hand lowers slightly lowers.

Ember: What… What do you mean?

Long Haired Man: It’s hard to describe but I feel- I’m getting this feeling that comes to me. A feeling that comes off of you. Like you’re familiar to me.

Ember suddenly turns her head as if getting a similar feeling. She holds the side of her head with her other hand as the one with the flame lowers more. She then slowly opens her eyes and looks over at him. She tries to say something but nothing seems to come out so instead she starts to slowly approach him. The Vigilante watches from the ground as they start to come closer to one another.

Vigilante, calling out to her: Ember! What are you doing?

The two of them look at each once more and hold out their hands. The other Helper members glance at one another concerned before looking back at Ember and the long haired man. The long haired man hovers his hand over her, breathing in the air before him. He then opens his eyes slowly and smiles, looking calmer and more amiable than before.

Long Haired Man: Fionna?

She opens her eyes in surprise and steps back suddenly. She holds out her hand, as if threatening to start another flame.

Ember: How do you know who I am?

He simply chuckles, holding his stomach with one hand and holding the back of his head with the other. The chuckle turns into a healthy laugh before he starts talking again.

Long Haired Man: Oh man! Fionna… I should have known from the start. (sigh) It’s okay, really. You don’t have to worry about me anymore. In fact, you can trust me more than anyone.

Ember: How?! I- I don’t even know who you are.

Long Haired Man: Y-You don’t? Really?

Ember: No? ...But for some reason, I do feel like you’re familiar to me somehow. It’s that same feeling that I felt… before. (turning to him) Just… who are you?

Long Haired Man: It’s okay, I’ll… I’ll explain it to you. My name is Casey Ementos.

Ember: And how does that help? It doesn’t explain why I should trust you. I’ve never heard that name before.

Long Haired Man: Fionna, come on. It’s me. I’m… your brother.

Ember: ...What?

She looks at him with wide eyes. The Vigilante watches them in surprise as well as he begins to stand up from the ground. The scene soon changes to the coastline again where the submarine had been. While the whole team isn’t present, a few members are including the Vigilante, Defender, Caliber and Ember as they stand with Casey. The Vigilante and Caliber are actually watching over Casey as he stands there, patiently, before Defender- who had been talking on the comms previously- comes over. He looks over and sees Fionna standing to the side, with her domino mask in her hand. She seems to be standing sheepishly or in an unsure manner. He looks back at the group and rejoins them.

Defender: Okay, Leviathan and Velocity are helping clean up and explaining this… uh situation to the MCA. The girls are helping out but they’ll be out of sight since they don’t exactly have a cover yet.

Caliber: So, that just leaves this guy to explain what he’s up to.

Vigilante: And his connection to Fionna.

Casey: Of course… I’ll explain everything.

Vigilante: Go on.

Casey: I apologize for all the destruction. I simply had enough of the current situation… Besides, I didn’t realize you were friends with my sister.

Defender: Yeah, you’re gonna have to explain that last part.

Fionna: Yes, I... I would actually like to know too. Please.

Fionna anxiously holds her arm while looking ahead. Casey looks at her for a moment before turning away.

Casey: Maybe I said too much. Maybe... you're better off not knowing.

Fionna: No! Look, I hardly remember much from my childhood. The fact that you're even here right now... is just- a miracle! But I need to know: where were you? What happened to our family?

Casey sighs before turning back to face her.

Casey: You're right. You have the right to know the truth.

He takes a moment, as if to prepare himself from what he's about to say. Fionna keeps her eyes locked on him.

Casey: When we were young, the world was such a different place back then. Our family... our family was a special one. I hardly remember much myself but- as you may imagine, it was very traumatic, the day I lost you. There was a group... known as the Hunters. They went after anyone that showed any sign of being a Mutant.

Vigilante: Hunters?

Casey: That's right... They weren't as common at the time as they used to be but still, they hunted us down all the same. (turning his attention back to Fionna) Our parents, they were scared for our lives. They wanted us to hide so that's what I did. I hid you and ran so they would chase after me instead of you.

Fionna: W-Why? Why would you do that?

Casey struggles to get the words out for a brief moment.

Casey: I was just a boy. I wasn't strong enough to protect you... or them! It was the only way I could make sure you were safe, even if it meant my own life. And I ran. I ran as far as my legs can carry me. And that's when I saw it. An explosion in the sky. Soon after that, people were changing, animals were changing. The whole world changed around me and I was surrounded by monsters and those Hunters. I found myself at a cliffside with nowhere else to go. I had no choice but to jump into the ocean. Fortunately, that's when I discovered my Mutant ability allowed me to breath underwater. I was able to survive down there so I just stayed. I was too afraid of the horrors I might find now that my world was gone. All I knew was that you were safe and that our parents would probably come back to get you but- But I never would have realized the world got even worse over time...

Fionna: But you can't just live underwater, can you? How did you eat? Surely you must have... come back, right?

Casey: No. I stayed down there and I... just survived. I found others like me. People who escaped the ocean using their aquatic mutations. Together, we were strong. We formed bonds, a community. A new world beneath the surface. We grew crops, hunted monsters that lived under the sea... I even trained against them and got stronger. All of that was my life growing up, my new family. But... somehow I knew that wasn't enough. I still knew that my actual family was out there, possibly suffering because I never returned home.

Fionna: So, you tried coming back...

He nods.

Casey: It wasn't easy but we managed to get intel on the surface world to see if things had gotten any better since the explosion. We managed to even get some surveillance. But when we finally got to see what the world was like, my worst fears were realized. Those mutated monsters had roamed the land freely. Governments that were supposed to help people kept them trapped in domes. And worst of all, our people- people with mutations and the sanity to use their abilities with good intentions- were treated harshly and harmed constantly. They were even manipulated into those riots, rather than standing up for themselves. It just felt like all the work I've done out there, under the sea, was meaningless! How could I let something like this happen to the world?!

Fionna: It's not your fault, Casey.

Casey: It doesn't matter. What does matter is I'm here now, hoping to correct the wrongs that have been done to our people. I'm hoping that me being here can make a proper difference and set things right again.

Fionna: Wow... I'm sorry, I- I can't believe that's what you went through.

Casey: It's true, sister. All of it.

Fionna: I haven't exactly had it any better. Our parents, they never came for me. I lived my childhood out on the streets with the other Mutant kids that survived. It wasn't until just a few years ago that I found a proper home.

Fionna looks down but Casey reaches out, holding her shoulders while looking her in the eyes as she looks up at him again.

Casey: If I could take it all back, I would. I'm sorry that you had to go through life on your own. But even though it molds us, we at least have the luxury to forget the past now because what matters now is that we have finally found each other again.

Defender: Listen, if you'd like, you can come with us. We have a headquarters in the city. Once we're all there, you could have a moment to properly catch up.

Casey: Y-Yes. I'd like that a lot.

Casey smiles and looks back at Fionna again. Across from them, Caliber has his arms crossed. He looks ahead at Casey, with a look of contempt on his face. The scene quickly jumps to a view of the cityscape as buildings pan out of view. One in particular appears as a large towering building of significant importance.

The Manhattan Municipal Building
March 25, 15:17 EDT

The doors soon open with Anton Reeves stepping out. He looks around, a smug smirk on his face, before walking off. Just as he turns the corner, a tape recorder appears in front of him, catching him off guard. As it turns out, Kate is the one holding the recorder.

Kate: Care for an interview, Mr. Reeves?

Reeves looks at her before chuckling.

Reeves: Surely you can't be serious.

Kate: As it turns out, we both have gotten new jobs since we last met. Yours just so happened to have led to mine.

Reeves: I don't have time for this, Ms. Wilson. As you can probably guess, I'm a very busy man now.

Kate: Alright cut the crap, man. I know who you really are. And I know exactly what you're up to.

Reeves: Do you? Do you really know what I'm doing? Or... is that why you're here? To get answers out of me.

Kate: Whatever it is, I will find out. And you can guarantee the people will know the truth about you.

Reeves: Ms. Wilson, have you ever considered the possibility that maybe this is the truth you're so desperately looking for? Maybe I really am trying to make a change for myself... for this city. But uh- off the record, threats only work when you have someone to threaten me with. And right now, I don't see the Vigilante. Do you? Oh yes... that's right. According to your own articles, didn't you publicly state that you were no longer associated with him? That you wouldn't come into contact with any more Mutants or Vigilantes?

He steps forward, looking down on her as she remains stiff-faced.

Reeves: It seems like whatever back up you thought you had to give you the courage- no, that's not it- the audacity to pull this stunt, you actually don't have at all. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to be going now. But you have a good day now, Ms. Wilson. I have a feeling we'll be talking real soon... or maybe not.

He chuckles once more before walking off. Kate turns to watch him leave with a visibly expression of anger on her face. She clenches her fists and storms off to chase him with a hand grabs her wrist. She stops and turns sharply to the person responsible; only to have her look of anger turn into a look of surprise. The person holding her back is Emmett in his casual clothing.

Kate: E-Emmett?

Emmett: What are you doing here?!

Kate: What do you think I'm doing? I have to get the scoop on this guy before he gets away with whatever it is he's doing.

Emmett: You really think he's just going to tell you his evil plan right off the bat? Just like that?

Kate: Hey, someone has to try, right?

Emmett: Trust me, me and Reeves have been enemies for a while now- I'm pretty sure I know him better than you do.

Kate: What's that supposed to mean?

Emmett: It means- I think you're biting off a bit more than you can chew here. If you wanna take him down, you have to take a different approach, Kate. Anton Reeves is a powerful man and, well... I can't always be there to protect you.

Kate: I don't need protection. I am my own person with my own goals. I'm leading the charge and doing my job here.

Emmett can't help but look away, lost in thought while she explains this. She soon notices and stops.

Kate: Or is there something else you wanted to talk about?

He sighs and turns his head back to face her again.

Emmett: Actually, yes. That's... why I came here. I was looking for you. So- I could talk about something... personal.

Kate: Well, what is it?

Emmett: It's about the riots and the Society. Look, we may have been able to defeat them but what they did still left an impact on the city. A lot of people are distrusting Mutants now, not sure how to approach them. Crimes are happening every day now on Mutant people without much so much as even batting an eye. I'm lucky to be one of those that look Human-enough to pass on for one of you. That I'm able to be among everyone else and... see the injustice being done here. In fact, this is all I've been thinking about. Not just for New York but other cities out there. Heck, even my city is probably going through something like this. A city of brotherly love turning against each other just makes my stomach curl even thinking about it. But if we want any of that to change, this is the place to start.

Kate: So what exactly did you have in mind?

Emmett: Well, it's not my idea per-say but... we think there should be someone to stand up the Mutants and speak for them so the public can see that Mutants are all bad. That if you give them a chance, they have the power to do some good. Not only that but to give hope to those in trouble; to ease their pain and give them something to look up to.

Kate: Well... why don't you do it then?

Emmett: M-Me?!

Kate: Why not? You have the right head on your shoulders, you know what you're talking about, you have experience in this area and you're a business man. A CEO, in fact. You know how to lead people, you know how to inspire people I mean- you always talk about hope, after all. You seem like a good fit to me so why not take the lead on this one?

Emmett: Yeah but, Kate, you know I'm not a Mutant. Someone who is going to represent the Mutant people should be a Mutant themselves, don't you think? Doesn't it set a good example?

Kate: All I know is sometimes... we don't get what we want. Sometimes we have to push ahead and take what we can get. Do what we have to do to get what we want. And what you want is for people to see Mutants in a good light, right? Well you're a good Vigilante... but you're an even better man. So just do what you usually do and people will follow your lead.

Emmett: You... really think that can work out?

Kate: Yeah, of course. And whatever happens just keep me in the loop too, alright? Maybe I can help out. Maybe you can help me out. You never know.

Emmett fiddles with his thumbs while looking off to the side. He seems anxious about this decision before nodding his head.

Emmett: Okay, I'll... consider it, at least. I trust you, after all. I mean- you never let me down before.

Kate: Just think about it, alright?

She leans in and kisses him on the cheek.

Kate: We'll talk later.

She walks off in a different direction, leaving Emmett alone on the sidewalk. He looks down, still unsure, before the scene cuts one more; back to the headquarters building in the city.

Helper Headquarters
March 25, 15:38 EDT

Inside, at the main room, Fionna and Casey are seen sitting on the couch together- conversing. They seem to be having a generally good time getting to know each other again. Across the room, Vigilante and Caliber are watching them talk.

Vigilante: I know I'm not exactly an expert but you don't seem very sociable.

Caliber: Tsk. How can I be? We know nothing about this guy and we just bring him back to our headquarters? Just like that?

Vigilante: He's her brother.

Caliber: But he was attacking the city. Just because they're related that makes it okay?

Vigilante: No, but-

Caliber: Besides, we don't know why he's here. He could just be feeding us lines. I've heard it all before, y'know.

Vigilante: So you don't trust him, is that it?

Caliber: Yeah. I guess that is it. And I know we're in the same boat otherwise you'd have taken that hood off already.

Vigilante: I'm just being cautious, that's all.

Caliber: Yeah, well, so am I. I know I'm the new guy and all but this team is all I have now. I'm not about to let some rando come up in here and ruin everything we're working on. I just don't understand how you of all people could be so casual about this!

Vigilante: Elias, look at them for a moment.

He sighs and turns to look, seeing them actually having a conversation. Fionna, from the looks of it, seems... pleased.

Vigilante: She's happy to be reunited with her family. That's something I can't experience. My family is gone. And for a while I thought the city was all I had... but this team is important to me too. And if this means that much to her, then what right do I have to take that away from her?

Caliber: I get it, man. I get it. It's just-

He lets out a frustrated grunt before getting up, walking off. Vigilante sighs, himself, and looks over at Fionna once more. Elsewhere, Caliber walks the halls of the headquarters and soon enters a room. The room seems to be a sort of technical laboratory where Adam is examining some screens. He turns to see Caliber enter but they both seem a little surprised by each other's company.

Caliber: Oh, hey Adam. What's up?

Adam: Elias, I'm glad you showed up actually. It's the strangest thing. Those seismic readings I received earlier are still happening. I originally thought that whatever was at the shore was the source but...

He trials off, thinking this over in his head. He then snaps out of it when he realizes Caliber is still there.

Adam: Ah, sorry. Never mind, it's probably nothing to worry about anyways. Even so, I'll continue keeping an eye on it in case it progresses.

Caliber thinks on it for a brief moment before nodding and walking outside the room. He puts his hands on his hips and sighs. But it's at that moment when a faint voice is heard. He turns his head to the voice and hears it coming from down the hallway. Caliber walks over and peeks around the corner. There, he sees Casey talking to someone through some kind of rigged device.

Casey: Yes, it's going swimmingly.

Reggie, over the device: It's just that you haven't reported in.

Casey: I've been preoccupied, Reggie. Those Mutants that I were worried about may not be a problem anymore. As it turns out, my sister is a member of their team.

Reggie, over the device: Y-Your sister? There with you? I can hardly believe it.

Casey: Yes, I feel the same.

Reggie, over the device: Unfortunately, as your advisor, I have to bring this to your attention. Should our plans go through, there is a chance that your sister may... become our enemy.

Casey: I'm well aware of the risks, Witwer! But I believe she'll come around. She must.

Reggie, over the device: There is always time to abort our operations.

Casey: No. We need to get this done. We have to. I refuse to let the surface world take advantage of our kind any longer. Whatever it is that happens, I'm sure she'll understand what I have to do.

He ends the communication broadcast and starts to walk off. A footstep is then heard, causing him to stop in place. A moment passes before he lets out a sigh. Some frustrated breathing can be heard behind him. He turns around and sees Caliber facing him; now standing out in the open.

Caliber: What is this!?

Casey: Hm? Oh. Right, you were on that team along with my sister.

Caliber: Yeah and you're up to something! I heard that call you made to your buddy, man.

He stares ahead blankly before crossing his arms.

Casey: So what if I am? How is any of that your business?

Caliber: You don't get it, man. The city and this team are my business now. You have plans for either of them then that makes your business my business.

Casey: Hmph. I'm not planning, you can't prove it.

Caliber stares at him waiting for an answer. Instead, Casey shakes his head.

Casey: Or rather, you can't prove to your comrades that I AM planning anything.

Caliber: How can you even think about doing something like this? Do you have any idea what this'll do to her?

Casey: To her? I'm doing this for her! You don't understand... you're just a simpleton. You're not an outcast like me, like her.

Caliber: I know what it's like to betray people, man. To turn your back on people because you're mad. And I know what that does to people.

Casey: My sister wanted a normal life. She doesn't need you and your team when she has me, her only family.

Caliber: Your sister wanted to stay in this city and be a hero. You can't just roll up in here and say you know what's best for her. Because right now, we're her family. Not some long haired, prissy dipstick who secretly evil or some crap.

Casey: Heh. Whatever. She knows we're family. We have a connection that you could only dream of. Who do you think she'll believe? Some kid she just met who has violent tendencies or her own flesh and blood who fought nobly to get here?

Caliber clenches his fists and lowers his head.

Casey: That's what I thought. Now stay out of my way or I'll-

Vigilante: You'll what?

Casey turns around with wide eyes and sees the Vigilante standing there, behind him.

Casey: Y-You. I was just- talking with your teammate and-

Vigilante: I heard everything. No need to pretend.

Casey: Ah, so it seems I'm cornered then.

Vigilante: What do you want with the city?

Casey: Nothing. I simply wish for it to drown with all the self-obsessed people who think they're better than us.

Caliber: So that size-stuff was you, after all!

Casey: Seismic. And yes. I have a group of followers beneath the surface, waiting for the right opportunity to strike. Once that happens, this city will be leveled by water and belong to us. This will send a message to the world that we're not to be messed with.

Caliber: You can't just sink a city!

Casey: It's not a matter of can or can not. It's a matter of will or won't. And I absolutely will. Now that my plans have been outed, I wish to extend my hand for you all to join me.

Caliber: What?!

Casey: Come on now. You know what I'm capable of. You know how powerful I am. And now you know that I have an army waiting for my signal to attack to city. This city that you fight for but receive little respect or gratitude. The world will continue to betray you all and yet you sit on your hands, taking every beating it gives you. Well, I refuse. And I know you tire of it too. Join me... and we can reclaim Mutant kind for our suppressors.

Vigilante: Mutant kind is not yours to command.

Caliber: And no one... threatens our city.

Casey: So you refuse my call to action. Fine. I suppose I can just collect my sister after disposing of you two.

Vigilante: Except she knows too. I left my comms on.

Casey: Gah! How paranoid can you be?!

Caliber: Clearly you've never worked with him before.

Casey: It doesn't matter! It's too late for you, Helpers, but she will come around.

Casey throws his hands out and gets his water whips out. Vigilante and Caliber ready themselves to fight but Casey simply shatters the window he was standing next to and leaps. The Vigilante and Caliber rush to the broken window and see him latch onto the side of the tower with his whips, swinging down to the street level.

Caliber: Gr, that guy! I'm going after him!

Vigilante: Don't.

Caliber: And why not?!

Vigilante: Remember what he said? He has an army waiting for his signal. We need to get the team ready and stop them before they act. If we focus on him completely, the city will be left defenseless. It's just what he wants us to do.

Caliber: I know but he's getting away, Drake!

Vigilante: I know that. But the city is what's important here.

Caliber: ...Right. Okay, let's go. And... thanks, for believing me.

The Vigilante nods and turns to head off. The scene cuts over to a moment later in the main room with the team gathered.

Jake: Okay, we're all here. Adam, what do you have for us?

Adam: Right so I was taking a look into those seismic readings for before and after further examination, the source turned out to be coming from the water. But not the shoreline, the sea bottom.

Emma: It's... underwater? Like a tremor?

Adam: Right! Well, not exactly. It is underwater but there's no doubt that this is a man-made... or maybe even Mutant-made entity.

Elias: He did say that he was responsible for those reading things.

Danny: So he was playing us the whole time? What kind of-

Elias: Dude...

Elias looks from Danny to Fionna. Danny glances over and sees her holding her hand close to her chest in silence. He then looks down, with a guilt ridden expression.

Danny: Ah, my bad, Fionna.

Fionna: No. It's... It's fine.

Emmett: I should have been here with you guys. If I was, maybe he wouldn't have-

Fionna: No, stop it. Don't blame yourself. You had something to do so this isn't on you. It's on me for trusting him, for believing in him.

Emma: I understand what you're saying, Fionna, but- he was your family. He still is. I know he's not the guy you wanted him to be or the guy that he wanted us to believe but, well, it's not like you should just ignore that part of him.

Fionna: I don't really know how to process this but... I know what's important right now is stopping him for sinking the city. Even if humans are threatening Mutant lives, they all don't deserve to suffer. Besides, Mutants live in the city too. He plans on drowning them too.

Elias: But why? The way he acts makes him sound like an activist for Mutants.

Fionna: He probably sees it as punishment for stooping so low as to join the Society.

Jake: He's not as just as he claims to be. (sigh) And to think I was considering, letting him join the team. To become our speaker for the Mutant people.

Fionna: You were only looking out for us. It's more than what he's doing, Jake.

Jake, uncertain: Yeah...

Drake: So the source of the seismic activity is... underwater, right? Then we have to intercept that source before they can act.

Adam: Did you not just hear yourself? It's underwater. We can't breath underwater, especially you.

Jake: Then we'll have to improvise. Drake's right. If the problem is underwater, then we have to go there.

Fionna: It is. And so is he. He told me about his time down there, about his people and his home. But if it's the same as his army then that's where their operation is being headed. And I know exactly where it is.

Jake: Fionna, no.

Fionna: What?

Jake: This is too personal for you. He's your brother, for crying out loud. Besides, you have fire-based abilities and this mission is underwater. Just let us do this for you.

Fionna: No. Jake, I can't let you do that. This is my fight just as much as yours. Besides, if anyone has to bring him to justice, it should be me.

She turns to Emma.

Fionna: I'm not going to give up on him just yet.

Emma nods with a weak smile.

Jake sighs and rubs the back of his head.

Jake: Alright, alright. But we'll do this together.

Fionna: Thank you.

Jake: But be careful. Both with your powers and... your brother.

She nods in response.

Jake: Alright, let's head out, Helpers.

The scene cuts the underwater encampment where Casey is seen swimming down towards. Reggie turns after conversing with one of the other men there and sees Casey approaching.

Reggie: Casey, you return.

Casey: The surface world is more frustrating than I thought. Prepare the attack immediately.

Reggie: Right away.

Casey: Then we'll head to the citadel to watch our invasion take place.

He turns his head and looks out in the distance where a faint tower can be seen through the foggy water.

Reggie, using his communication device: Commence the attack.

Elsewhere, a mollusk-looking Mutant receives the transmission and activates a large machine. Inside, a more animalistic Mutant can be seen spinning around- affecting the water around it. The machine increases the rotation of the creature which pushes the water up more. On the surface, the water splashes hard against the coast of the city until it quickly escalates into full on tides bashing against the city. Water flows into the streets, knocking away cars and even people. Each wave that hits the city, becoming more powerful than the last. In the air, the Jumpjet flies towards the coastline. On board, Jake looks down- seeing the affect the increased tides are having on the city.

Jake: Looks like we have some issues.

Fionna: They already started the attack on the city.

Jake: Those tides are hitting harder and harder. Soon the city will be covered in water.

In the back of the jet, the rest of the team sits or stands ready.

Emmett: Then people need help. We have to get out there.

Danny: Right. What say we do some damage control together, bud?

Emmett: You got my back, I got yours.

Danny nods.

Emma: Alright, I'll do what I can too. I doubt I'll be much help out in the actual water.

Zara, to Caliber: What are you going to do?

Caliber: I'm gonna get this backstabber and bring the fight to him. You guys save the city. That's the important thing.

Zara look hesitant at first but nods in response.

Jake, over the speaker: Alright, I'm bringing her down. Be quick.

Outside, the Jumpjet can be seen lowering onto a rooftop. The door lowers and half of the team drops down on the rooftop. The Jumpjet quickly raises up again and approaches the coast. Emma and Zara look off at the ship flying off.

Emmett, putting his helmet on: You two know what to do?

Emma: Rescue work.

Leviathan: Alright. Danny and I will be out there securing any falling structures and such.

Velocity, after securing his helmet: We will? I mean, yeah sure. That's exactly what we're doing. Eheh.

Leviathan sighs before squatting down and lifting off from the rooftop. Velocity speeds off down the building while Emma transforms into his Monster form and leaps off the rooftop as well. Zara speaks to herself for a moment before producing some energy from her hands, allowing her to hover down safely. Meanwhile, the Jumpjet settles and hovers over a section of the water. Inside, Jake flips a switch.

Jake: Adam, you there? Is this the location?

Adam, over the comms: Yep, that's it. The seismic readings should be directly below you. But again, I don't know how you all plan on reaching it. The Jumpjet is not optimized for underwater travel.

Jake: That's okay, we're not taking the Jumpjet.

Adam, over the comms: Come again?

Jake: Just keep us posted on those readings and look out for the others.

Adam, over the comms: Yeah, got it. Be in touch.

The transmission ends while Fionna puts her mask on.

Vigilante, coming into the cockpit: So what exactly did you have in mind?

Jake: You know how my energy can form barricades and energy fields? Well, I was thinking I might be able to surround you all in an energy bubble. It'll have some air in it but I don't know how long it'll last for.

Ember: Long enough for us to reach the source of those readings, I hope.

Jake: That's the plan. At any rate, I should be fine. The device protects me so I should be able to breath under water, giving you three enough room in the bubble.

Caliber: Just like one of those water levels.

Jake: Actually, yeah.

Caliber: Everyone hates the water levels though.

Vigilante: We'll make it work.

Jake nods and activates his device. The device forms the suit around him including his mask.

Defender: Ready?

Ember: Let's do this.

Defender: Alright, setting the Jumpjet to autopilot.

He flips some more switches and the scene cuts to the door lowering once more. Defender takes them down in his energy bubble while the Jumpjet remains hovering over the water in the air. Once they submerge, Defender propels the bubble downwards by holding onto his device with his other hand.

Defender: How's the air, guys?

Caliber: Once you live in the city, you get used to it, I guess.

Ember: We're fine. You?

Defender: Yeah. You guys seeing what I'm seeing?

Vigilante: Yeah.

As they get deeper, Casey's machines appear into the view.

Caliber: Those must be the things causing the tides.

Vigilante: Right, we have to take them down before Casey floods the city.

Ember: Wait. Look.

She points to a citadel in the short distance.

Caliber: A tower?

Defender: Could be their base of operations. Like our headquarters.

Ember: Which means Casey is most likely there, watching this all unfold.

Defender: I know what you're thinking about that's just too risky, Fionna.

Caliber: Besides, don't we have to focus on the machines?

Vigilante: Don't worry. I can head over there and get started on taking them down.

Defender: Are you sure? Don't you have a weakness to water?

Vigilante: Most of the time... but not when I have this.

He activates his Smart Swim form, which forms around his head and back.

Vigilante: I'll be able to survive in the water... for a short while. Long enough for you to give you to the time you need, Fionna.

Ember: Drake... thank you.

Defender: Alright, fine. We'll join you when we can.

Vigilante nods and pushes against the side of the bubble, phasing through and entering the water. The Smart Swim form gets to work, providing oxygen and water support for Drake as he swims over to the machines. Defender flies down towards the Citadel and props the bubble against a hatch.

Ember: Alright, this should be good enough.

Caliber: Do you want me to come with?

Ember: Thanks but no. This is something I have to do on my own. Besides, Drake and Jake need you to help take down those machines.

Caliber: Right.

Defender: Fionna, be careful. Please.

Ember: You too.

Defender nods and pulls away- Ember phases through the bubble after breathing in. She then places her hand against the hatch and it soon bubbles up as the heat becomes immense. Soon enough, the door pops open and she enters. The scene then cuts back to the surface where more and more water is filling the streets. Monster retrieves some building from a sinking building while Leviathan holds up the rooftop to prevent it from caving in. Out on the street, Zara can be seen clearing some debris using her energy powers. That's when Velocity runs on over, carrying some people. He puts them down and they run off to safety.

Velocity: Alright, just got some more people out of submerged van. How we doing here?

Zara: Uh... fine. There's people behind this-

Velocity looks ahead and speeds off, leaving behind a blue blur before returning from the area that Zara just cleared, with a woman and a child in his arms. He puts them down.

Woman: Thank you. Both of you.

Velocity flashes a smile confidently while Zara hesitantly nods. The woman takes her child and runs off.

Zara: This is gonna keep up with how quick the water is coming in.

Velocity: Well, we're just gonna have to be quicker.

Zara: Easy for you to say.

Velocity: Hey, you've got this. You can save people on your own but we can save this city together.

Zara: I... don't think we can. Look!

Velocity turns around and sees what looks like a tsunami approaching the city.

Velocity: Oh boy... that's a problem.

He quickly activates his comms.

Velocity: Guys, we got a problem here.

Leviathan, over the comms: My hands are little... full here.

Adam, over the comms: I'm here. What's happening?

Velocity: What's happening? Uh well there appears to be a giant WAVE approaching the city.

Adam, over the comms: That sounds like a tsunami. Whatever is causing these tides must be escalating in power and speed.

Velocity: Okay, yeah, that's understandable but how do I stop it?

Adam, over the comms: With exactly that, power and speed.

Velocity: Well, all I have is speed so-

Adam, over the comms: And that's all you need. If you provide enough force with your speed, you should be able to push the tsunami back enough for it to dissipate. In theory.

Velocity: In theory?

Adam, over the comms: We don't exactly have a lot of options, man.

Velocity: Man...

Zara: Go. You've got this.

Velocity looks at her then smiles. He turns back to the oncoming wave with determination and runs off towards the wave. He then runs back and forth along the coast, gaining more and more speed each time he passes by.

Velocity: Come on, Velocity. Come on!

He pushes himself to go faster as the speed starts to create a vortex of wind pushing up against the water. Zara watches from the distance, taking it in. Back underwater, Vigilante and Caliber can be seen attacking the machines with Defender focusing his efforts on the bubble around Caliber. From a window in the citadel, this can be seen by Reggie. Casey steps into view with an angered expression as he approaches the window.

Casey: Those accursed Helpers. Can't you see that they're trying to ruin our plans! Get out there and fight them!

Reggie: Y-Yes. Of course.

Reggie rushes out while Casey turns his attention back to the window, with a scowl. Outside, in the water, Defender turns his head before looking back at the energy bubble. He then does a double take.

Defender: Looks like we've got company, you two!

Vigilante looks up and sees the army of Casey's men approaching. They're swimming through the water exceedingly quickly.

Vigilante: I'm still good. I can fight. What about you, Defender?

Defender: Nope. Not while I'm focusing on Caliber here.

Caliber: Then don't.

Defender: What?! You'll drown.

Caliber: I have an idea. Just drop the bubble.

Defender looks at Vigilante.

Vigilante: I trust him. (turning to Caliber) But if you die on us, I'll beat you back to life myself.

Caliber: Ha! I wouldn't bet against that.

Defender: Man, you two need anger management. Alright, dropping the bubble.

Defender drops the energy bubble around Caliber and he becomes submerged in water. He actually struggles to even remain in his position in the water. Defender looks at him with worried eyes but his attention is diverted back to the army as they approach closely now. He raises his arm and creates an energy barricade before the three of them which works for some time as some enemies crash into it but others simply swim around the barricade.

Defender: Heads up, we're fighting after all.

Vigilante swims over, nearly matching their speed, and strikes one of the men hard. He spins in the water to strike another and swims back so that the tank his form created hits the one behind him. Defender creates some smaller energy blocks which he swings around to knock away any incoming enemies. Caliber, at this point, is actually just choking and having trouble breathing. When one of Casey's men grabs him, his skin and costume starts to glow. The aquatic looking man notices this then looks Caliber in the eyes, seeing them glowing a faint green. He then headbutts the guy as he's thrown back with immense force. Caliber then yells out, most likely in pain, which seems to fuel his strength.

Defender: I can't believe it. He's drowning to give himself pain to increase his strength.

Vigilante: That's... Caliber, alright.

Reggie: Fools! You don't know what you're doing. Casey is going to bring new order to the world for all of Mutant kind. By destroying those machines, you are destroying your chance to survive in a world in his-

Before he can finish, Caliber swims as quickly as he can muster and strike him with a super powered punch, knocking him away. Defender then forms an energy bubble around him and shifts the water out, allowing Caliber to breath again.

Caliber: AGH! Th-Thanks, man.

Defender: That... looked painful.

Caliber: It was.

Vigilante: Come on. We still have these machines to destroy.

Caliber: Then it's a good thing I did that. Mind giving me a swing?

Defender: Batter up!

Defender swings the bubble around like a bat and slams it into the machines. Caliber braces for impact and readies a punch at the same time. The impact destroys the machine completely with the Mutant creature instead getting knocked away. They try this again for the other machine and the same result occurs. Vigilante then joins the bubble and reforms back to his usual form.

Vigilante: Nice work. That should stop the tides.

Caliber: Great... now I just need something to stop this headache. Ugh.

From the window, Casey steps back in surprise.

Casey: No... No way... I can't let this be the end of my plans!

He turns to run for the door when it crashes open. He stops in place as Ember enters the main room of the Citadel, facing Casey with scorn.

Casey: Fionna...

Ember: Going somewhere?

Casey: Only to finish the job myself.

Ember: No. You're going to stand down, Casey.

Casey looks taken back.

Casey: You're threatening me? You're own brother?!

Ember: It's not like I've known you for long.

She starts walking around to him and he slowly starts to do the same, causing him to circle each other.

Casey: No. I suppose not. But it doesn't matter how long away we've been apart. You and I both know that feeling is still there. The feeling of our kinship. Our family bonds.

Ember: And yet you're willing to throw that away for what? For revenge?

Casey: For a better world. I'm trying to bring back the world we lost by getting rid of the one you're stuck in.

Ember: Well, I can't let you do that.

Ember readies a fireball and throws it at him. He counters with slash at his water whip.

Casey: And I can't let you stop me.

He swings his other one at her but she ducks down and dodges. She throws her arm out as releases a wave of flames out. Casey throws his arms forward and releases a wall of water from his palms that extinguishes her flames. He then throws it forward, splashing the area. She runs to dodge it but winds up slipping and falling to the floor. Her domino mask falls off her face when she does. Fionna looks up and reaches for it when she hears Casey slowly approach her.

Casey: You're weak. The surface has made your powers soft. But me? Staying down here for so long has made my powers stronger. More in touch with my Mutant side. But I can still teach you.

She slams her fist against the floor and swipes her feet around before kicking up off the ground. She then slams her foot down, leaving behind a fiery trail that Casey just misses. As her foot slams down, she breaths out heavily while he claps.

Casey: Good, good. You're improving.

Fionna: This isn't a game, Casey! You're putting people's lives at risk!

Casey: And what have those people done for us? Done for you? Don't act like you had it any better than me. From the stories you told me, even if it were for a brief time, I know that you struggled. That people didn't help when you needed them to. That you were forced to steal and serve. This time, it can be different. It can be just us. Not only would it be a better world but it would be a world where we can have each other again. Where we don't have to worry about our family being torn apart by others.

Fionna: That's all I want. A world where we can a family again. Where I never have to suffer, where Mutants are free to be who they want to be. No judgement, no pain, just... peace. That's what I want. That's what I'm fighting for. But taking it by force, won't make us any better. How many other families will be torn apart until ours is put back together, Casey? How many Mutants do you have to drown before you teach humans a lesson? How many times do we have to fight until you realize that what you're doing... won't bring our parents back?

Casey: Can't you just see that I'm trying to help you?!

Fionna: No, Casey. You're only trying to help yourself. I would have been happy if it was just you, coming back to me, after all those years. But you're blinded by your rage that you can't see that the world has to change on its own before it can get better. I believe that mankind- that people have the power to learn and better themselves.

Casey: Then you're a fool. They'll betray you. They'll hunt you down and destroy you for what you are.

Fionna: Believe what you will. But I'm here to help, not harm. That is my purpose.

Casey: Then there's no convincing you. If you won't join me willingly, then I'll just have to force you!

Casey rushes ahead, yelling. Fionna looks at him and charges as well. The two then slam against each other, locking hands. As they peer the other's eyes, bearing their teeth in the struggle, their hands start to become envelop in a glow. A glow that starts to overcome them completely. In that glow, visions of other people take form. And soon enough the vision disappear in an abrupt flash; one that knocks Fionna to the floor. Casey, himself, is left light headed and having difficulty standing up. But the look on his face is one of surprise and enlightenment. He turns to Fionna but his attention drifts to the window, where he sees the three Helpers approaching. He then looks down at Fionna again, who is struggling to get up while also holding her head.

Casey: This isn't over yet, Fionna. You may have stopped my plans here but now... I know what I have to do. So remember this, sister, we will meet again. And I'll be more powerful than ever before.

With this final words, he rushes out of the command room of the Citadel- leaving Fionna on the floor. She reaches out for him but winds up falling over again, groaning in pain. Her vision then soon fades to black. The scene later on, fades to the Jumpjet interior, where Fionna is seen waking up with a blanket around here.

Fionna: Wh-What? What happened? Where's-?

She looks around, now seeing the rest of the team with her.

Jake: Hey, you alright?

Fionna: Yeah. I was with him. Casey but... he-

Drake: He got away, yeah. By the time we got there, he wasn't around.

Elias: Only you, passed out on the floor.

Emma: Elias.

Elias: What? That's... what happened, isn't it?

Fionna: So he got away.

Elias: You tried your best. Family isn't always easy to deal with.

Fionna: I guess not. And I only just met him... after so many years apart.

Emma: We'll do what we can to help you reunite with him. Even if he's... technically a bad guy now. But- well, a lot of people thought I was lost when I mutated but my brother had hope for me. And eventually, I pulled through. What I'm trying to say is, it's still possible to get him back.

Fionna: Thanks. I appreciate that.

Danny: At any rate, once those machines were destroyed, the tides stopped and the water level is starting to return to normal.

Drake: Even though we're not closer to knowing Reeves' plans or providing support for Mutants, we can still do what we're known to do: save the city.

Fionna nods, holding the blanket around her more. The scene then shows the Jumpjet flying over the cityscape.

The scene then continues at the Helper Headquarters building, now later on in the evening.

Helper Headquarters
March 25, 20:29 EDT

Inside the building, specifically in one of the bedrooms, the door can be seen sliding open: with Drake and Jake entering the room. They both seem a bit off caught by each other's company before turning to another person.

Jake: You wanted to see us?

Drake: And how come you needed both of us?

The person they're talking to being Fionna. Her room is quite simple with a bed and a desk. The layout is similar to the other rooms and it's quite simplistic. Fionna, herself, looks a bit flustered.

Fionna: I tried sleeping on it. I thought it was nothing but... no, I believe what I saw was real and... I had to tell someone.

Jake: Hang on, slow down. What- What did you see?

Fionna: A vision. It... it happened when I was fighting Casey. Our hands touched and... I got this feeling. Like it washed over me.

Drake: You've been getting those kind of feelings all day. Can it be connected to your powers?

Fionna: Maybe. I know I have the ability to sense other Mutants.

Jake: Right, that's how you found out Emmett was an alien.

Fionna: Yeah but- I'm thinking maybe it's not unique to me. Maybe Casey has this power as well.

Drake: Then he can sense Mutants too?

Fionna: Maybe. But more importantly, I think our senses are heightened when we come into contact with each other. That's why our connection was stronger the closer we got.

Jake: That explains why you accepted that he was your brother so quickly. But what about those visions?

Fionna: Right, about that. I haven't gotten a sense or a feeling like that before. Nothing so strong that it overwhelmed me. But it wasn't just the power that got to my head. It was what I saw in that vision.

Drake: What... did you see, Fionna?

Fionna: I saw people. Mutants. Just like me... and Casey. And I think he saw them too.

Drake: Mutants?

Fionna: Yeah. I think... I think they were my family too.

Drake and Jake look at Fionna, taking in this revelation.

Trivia[]

  • This episode marks the start of the second arc for this season.
  • Originally, the plans Casey reviews in the beginning of the episode were meant to be maps and charts and such. However, the Writer realized that having those things written in ink wouldn’t be possible underwater so they were changed to stone slabs, adding to the already primitive/industrial feeling of their encampment.
  • Zara's dialogue with Danny during the rescue scene was added in at the last minute and wasn't originally planned during development.
  • This episode suffered quite a few delays for a multitude of reasons.
