  • Checking in for the first time in a couple years. In case you don't remember me I am the annoying Israeli kid from 2012 who couldn't shut up about his knights series. Anyway I've been having trouble falling asleep so I've been going through some old stuff of mine. I barely remember anything about my time here (seems like you stayed for quite a bit longer than me) but I do remember you were a friend.

I know none of you read UU but I'm telling you about this anyway because bite me. I Renovated two new entries this past week, Fire in the Spider Hole and Gotta Bounce. Fire in the Spider Hole is sort of a typical entry, but Gotta Bounce gives us some of dat juicy lore, so make sure to check those out.

The Puppet Master finally got new art, and Zetium finally got a page in general. I may get my episodes out on time, but I'm not exactly punctual about updating my pages after the fact.

As you might have guess by the cover art I uploaded, a soundtrack is in the works for Star Spirit, specifically its upcoming third season. I'm warning you now that some of the tracks in and of themselves will be spoilers for the events of the season. I'd be more cautious about releasing them if half of you people didn't keep proving to have the same foreshadowing/hint-catching abilities as a limbless infant.

    Wiki News

The next Support Group meeting is next Saturday, February 4th, at 9PM EST over on the BTFF EX chat.

We've had a few changes to the wiki over the past week, so let's just go over those real quick. The suggestion for the Species page template to include a "Biology" section was approved and implemented, the suggestion to test run a Featured Episode category was (narrowly) approved and will be put into effect in February, and yours truly introduced five new coding changes to the wiki that should make life just a tad easier for everyone.

At the moment, we're voting as to whether or not we should bring back the Stub category as part of the cleanup process. Check that out and vote for it over here.

I took the liberty of updating the graphic for the Multiverse page to one that wasn't made in MSPaint and is canonically accurate. Check it out my dudes.

I've started making badge art for pages that are fairly iconic but have art too outdated to be used on badges. This should open up a lot of freedom for pages that can be featured on badges, so be sure to bring up anything that comes to mind, and make sure to check out the list of badges that still need replacing.

President Trump is a thing now.

You know how in movies like Final Destination or whatever where the main characters avoid dying when they were supposed to and thus screw up everything about the timeline forever? I feel like 2012 was supposed to be the end times and now that plot point is happening in real life except with the entire Earth.

This should be an interesting year.

I don't have much to say about this one, honestly. The series isn't out yet, so I'm mostly just featuring this one for the good art. The character himself seems interesting, but I won't be able to properly judge that until the debut of the series proper.

Miguel Ferrer, the voice of Magister Hulka from Ultimate Alien, passed away on the 19th due to throat cancer. Other notable roles of his include Dr. Garret Macy on Crossing Jordan, NCIS Assistant Director Owen Granger on NCIS: Los Angeles, Vice President Rodriguez in Iron Man 3, and FBI forensic pathologist Albert Rosenfield in Twin Peaks. He played quite a few roles over his career, and I'm sure he'll be missed both within and outside of the industry.

In lighter news, the almighty Stu from Atamaii has apparently been to Playmates Toys, the people manufacturing the toys for the Ben 10 reboot, and says that the toys are complete, but still strictly confidential.

    Ben 10 Reboot Toy News!

A new set of Reboot episode titles have popped up on Wikipedia. This actually happened a bit ago, but I can't seem to find any actual sources for these, so I've held off on reporting them simply because they might be fake. Titles like "Recipe for Disaster" and "Hole in Ten" sound legit, but titles like "Bright Lights, Black Hearts" and "The Beast Inside" just sound fishy for a show like the reboot.

CN released a video game based on the reboot for Android/iOS this past week called Ben 10: Up to Speed. It's your basic runner-type game, and it costs about $3 USD. Is it good? Is it bad? Idfk let me talk you impatient shits

    Bad Stuff

    • It doesn't run very well on older devices but that's to be expected I guess.
    • If you don't like runner games you won't like this at all.
    • $3 might be a bit high idk.

    Good Stuff

    • It's actually got like linear progression and levels and stuff instead of the endless running gimmick you see in most runners.
    • There are lots of the aforementioned levels, so I'd say it's probably worth the price if you like runners.
    • The levels themselves actually have replay value by having various level goals and certain areas you can only reach with aliens that might not be on your immediate roster.
    • The reboot's art style actually looks nice in a video game.
    • Fills us in on story details not covered in the show.
    • Has some fun parkour/enemy fighting mechanics.

Overall I really like this game personally, but if you don't like runners you're probably gonna hate it. It's pretty damn good for its genre though.

On another note this game has gotten me thinking about something else regarding the reboot so here's editorial part 2 theorizing about a mediocre kid's cartoon boogaloo

Basically there are three points I find particularly interesting here:

    • The end of "Riding the Storm Out" where we get foreshadowing of a bigger threat coming to Earth.
    • The Clocktopus where we find out Ben is afraid of squids.
    • This game where the enemies are robotic alien drones from an unknown source that look suspiciously like the ones from OS.

Now, what major part of the Ben 10 franchise is known for:

    • Not showing up until the plot deems it allowable.
    • Being associated with squids.
    • Using robotic drones to try capturing the Omnitrix

    Yep that's right everybody:

    EON!

No but seriously if all this shit isn't Vilgax buildup I will be very surprised.

    Ben 10 News

Okay so remember how last week CN released a supposed "origin story" video that didn't really give us any info on the reboot's origin story? Well, the video game I talked about in the editorial section actually gives us the friggin thing! It's basically the exact same as the OS origin story, Heatblast and all, with the admittedly more reasonable setup of the meteor crashing a fair distance away from Ben instead of right up in his goddamn face.

The big project I've been working on this past week is an image-based template for every page that's ever been featured. Feel free to use it any pages of yours that get featured.

I've decided to try hosting the Gazette on a template and then copy-pasting that onto people's Message Walls so I can correct any mistakes on a single page instead of going through every single thread I've posted.

    Wiki News

The next Support Group meeting is next Saturday, January 21st, at 9PM EST over on the BTFF EX chat.

With a new year upon us and the end of the Christmas season finally over and done with, the wiki has adopted a new theme based on the blue and green color scheme of the reboot. Say what you want about the reboot's art style overall, but I do think it has a nice command of colors at the very least. If you're wondering what's up with the background, it's an imitation of last year's background designed to look like a lime and aqua double helix.

I've started making badge art for pages that are fairly iconic but have art too outdated to be used on badges. This should open up a lot of freedom for pages that can be featured on badges, so be sure to bring up anything that comes to mind, and make sure to check out the list of badges that still need replacing.

    Editorial

Controversial opinion time here, everyone: I actually like the Ben 10 reboot. I'm not saying it doesn't have glaring, glaring flaws that annoy me somewhat, but I still find it enjoyable. I think it might actually be easier for me to sum up my opinions on the reboot in bullet point format.

    Cons

Starting out with this because there are a lot.

    • The art style bugs me. It does at least let the actual movement of the animation look smooth, unlike a lot of other low-budget reboots these days, but it still looks like crap.
    • The voice actor choices are confusing at best. They replaced literally everyone except Tara Strong and I don't know why. None of the new voices seem to fit especially well, and Stinkfly's voice is just outright horrendous.
    • Speaking of Stinkfly, he's complete shit in the reboot and I'm glad he's the least-used alien. He's way weaker than his OS counterpart, his design is generic, and his voice is one of the most grating things I've ever heard.
    • The writing can feel very awkward at times. It never feels like they're pandering too hard to the "hip kid" demographic, which I am eternally grateful for, but they do like getting closer to that threshold than I'm comfortable with.
    • The way they handle the OS villains they bring over is annoying. We're given no proper introductions to them, and they're honestly just kind of boring.

    Pros

    • They did at least keep Tara strong as Ben, thank god.
    • I do think Upgrade looks neat in purple and Overflow's design is pretty good.
    • Speaking of colors, like I mentioned earlier, the reboot has a nice grip on how to use them properly, making it a bit easier to look at than UAF/OV's EVERYTHING MUST BE YELLOWISH GREEN ALL HAIL OUR VAGUELY PISS-COLORED OVERLORDS
    • The humor is pretty funny sometimes, I must admit.
    • There's an episode that takes place in an IKEA where Four Arms uses babies as projectiles and honestly if you don't think that's one of the best things put to television get out of my face.
    • The new villains they introduce can be kinda fun. Steam Smythe is a steampunk-themed villain that values the past over the present, so seeing him fight Ben's Omnitrix aliens, especially Upgrade, is sorta neat. Lord Decibel is a villain I appreciate for just how over-the-top he is. He's got a good design imo and his gimmick of using sound is fun. I don't know if he's recurring villain, but I hope he ends up being one just because of how fun he is to watch.
    • Speaking of Lord Decibel, the episode he debuted in actually didn't have a lot of comedy in it. Some of the episodes are less comedy-based than others, and the show can actually end up being interesting when they do drop the comedy for a bit.

Overall, is it a great show? Not by any means, no, but it's not bad, either. If you're looking for OS 2, you're gonna be disappointed, but judging the reboot purely by what it is instead of as part of a franchise that crashed and burned a couple years back, it's honestly one of the better cartoons on CN nowadays. Granted, that's mostly because a lot of CN's lineup is crap, but still.

I legit had trouble narrowing down what I should talk about in this week's art corner because of how much I've been drawing this past week. I've been refining a new art style over the past couple of weeks, and it's allowing me to create more expressive art in a much shorter amount of time than my old styles.
