First Appearance | Big Plans |
Magister Maxwell "Max" Tennyson (born July 1945) Ken, Gwen and Ben's paternal grandfather. Max is widely considered the greatest Plumber in the Milky Way. He is the Timeline 1 equivalent of the canon Max.
Appearance[]
In Big Plans, 39-year-old Max had the same appearance as his canon equivalent in the flashback in Truth.
In The Monster, 60-year-old Max had his Alien Force/Ultimate Alien appearance, but with fewer wrinkles.
In Crossroads, 65-year-old Max had his Heroes United appearance.
In Protector of the Omniverse, 69-year-old Max has his Alien Force/Ultimate Alien appearance, but his shirt has visible buttons and its colors are slightly faded due to time's passage. The sleeves of his shirt are outlined in black.
His colors match the color palette of Heroes United.
Personality[]
An easy-going, kind, and normally jovial man, Max often comes across as pleasantly absent-minded at times, but is actually quite perceptive. For instance, he knew early on in Ben's adventures who was most likely pursuing him, as he was aware of Vilgax's history having fought the alien tyrant many times before.
Max is a very brave man, having dedicated his life to preserve peace on Earth between humans and extraterrestrial life. His bravery has resulted in him being injured, having his DNA spliced, nearly killed in several dozen ways, and more. His prioritization of others' safety above his own, even with no weapon in sight, shows his selfless nature at its finest.
Ever the consummate strategist, Max is very intelligent.
Though well-meaning, Max is not without a stern side, having struggled to guide Ben during the first few months of his grandson's possession of the Omnitrix. When pushed, Max can be strict and harsh, but not unreasonably so. He is also not afraid to call people out, no matter who they are, on their selfishness and mistakes when necessary.
Max is also brave and adventurous in the culinary world, and often has an appetite for foods considered weird or gross, both from Earth and beyond. This comes from his travels across the globe and galaxy.
One of Max's few faults is that when personal threats from his past resurface, he tends to not think clearly and acts more self-propelling, to the point of omitting information from those trying to help him, family included.
History[]
Prior to Bonds[]
Max spent his childhood summers on his Uncle Jedediah's farm, where he learned about the merits of hard work.
Max had been afraid of heights as a kid and to beat his fear he climbed up to the top of the water tower and "scared the fear" right out of him.
Max has a childhood friend called Donovan GrandSmith, who says that Max always worried and was never a risk-taker like him. 30 years earlier, Donovan and Max had both been broke when Donovan offered Max a business opportunity, which he turned down. Max later became a Plumber (most people thought Max was just a regular plumber), establishing that Max's career as a Plumber lasted for about 28 years before he retired.
When he was about 17, he was a pilot in the air force. During a mission, he saw and followed a space ship. He blasted it, but the space ship got away and Max's plane crashed. He talked to the commander about the space ship, which made him an astronaut and gave him a mission to be the first man on the moon. While at a saloon, he met Verdona in her human form and fell in love with her. Suddenly, a giant human robot came and attacked Verdona. Max saved her and left to a far away desert where the robot couldn't find them. Verdona explained to Max that she is not from Earth, she is from another planet. The robot that chased them was a sentient robot called a Synthroid and it left a bracelet on Verdona's hand, which made her unable to do most her powers, save for her telepathy. She revealed to Max that she was the one in the spaceship he saw before she read Max's mind. She told him that their minds are now linked. She also revealed that the Synthroid wants her to be a battery-like energy source for their planet (since she is an energy being). The Synthroid came back and kidnapped Verdona, but Max used his mind to locate Verdona (since Verdona said their minds are now linked). He (with a help from Magister Labrid) saved Verdona and destroyed the Synthroid.
Verdona invited Max to her planet, but Max denied the offer, saying that he has other things to do on Earth. They kissed and Verdona left. The next Monday, he went into astronaut training. Eventually, Max joined the Plumbers after Magister Labrid recruited him. He told Ben that was the story of how he and Verdona met later and said good night to Verdona before he went to sleep.
Max would have been the first man on the moon, but he left the program before the Apollo Moon mission. He did in fact go into space, just not with NASA.
Max went to the moon three times and stayed at a secret lunar Plumber base.
Max went up against Vilgax several times in the late 60's and early 70's.
Bonds[]
In Big Plans, he was contacted by Magister Gilhil, who told him that one of his teams had caused Dr. Psychobos to crash on Earth, and that he instructed them to bring him to the Mt. Rushmore base. Max welcomed them and offered to make them food. Later, he was present when Magister Chang sent Servantis to the Null Void for illegally experimenting on Dr. Psychobos.
Prior to Missing Pieces[]
In 1998, Max and his partner Devin were trying to escape from Ragnarok, a dangerous criminal who steals the energy of stars and sells them to the highest bidder. The key to his ship having been stolen by Devin, Ragnarok was in pursuit to retrieve it. Having managed to render their ship dead in space, Ragnarok boarded and attacked them, demanding his key back.
When none of his or Max's weapons were effective against Ragnarok, Devin was forced to absorb electricity to buy them some time. While Devin was able to retain his sanity (due to his experience), Ragnarok managed to prevent Max from using a Null Void Projector and trapped them both under heavy fire. Devin shielded Max from Ragnarok's attack, buying Max a chance to get his hands on the Null Void Projector and send Ragnarok to the Null Void.
Devin died in Max's arms, expressing that dying to save Earth wasn't a bad way to go. His last request was for Max to tell his wife and son that he loved them. Riddled with survivor's guilt, Max retired from the Plumbers.
Max later went through the same events as his canon equivalent, as depicted in the original series and Destroy All Aliens.
Missing Pieces[]
In The Monster, Ben, Gwen and Max met Malware, an incomplete Galvanic Mechamorph accidentally created by Azmuth, who lost his patience and kidnapped Myaxx to complete himself. Ben, Max and Azmuth went to Galvan B to save Myaxx and stop Malware. At the end of the episode, when Ben was disappointed at himself for failing to reason with Malware, Max offered to cheer him up by telling him a story from his Plumber days.
In 2008, Gwen and Max freed a 15-year-old Kevin from the Null Void.
Max then went through some of the same events as his canon equivalent, as depicted in the first two seasons of Alien Force. Afterwards, he spent several months training the Plumbers' Helpers.
With Max's help, the Plumbers' Helpers were then made into an official group, consisting of children and teenagers who are too young to be official Plumbers but still wish to help the universe in some way.
In Crossroads, Gwen visited Max to tell him that she received a letter of admission to Friedkin University via their Early Entrance Program. She revealed that she had some doubts about accepting the offer. Although Max felt it would be beneficial for her to do so, he made it clear that it was ultimately her decision to make, and expressed that he would support her no matter what.
Powers and Abilities[]
Max is skilled in using a variety of Plumber tools and weaponry. He also has experience with some alien tech, such as Transporter Discs.
Max is proficient at driving.
Before joining the Plumbers, Max was a United States Air Force pilot. As such, he was an expert at flying an F-104 Starfighter, which included dogfighting, as he was able to pursue and shoot down an alien spacecraft and he can sufficiently pilot both helicopters and Earth spaceships. He has also been shown to pilot alien spacecraft proficiently.
Max is a skilled street fighter and has been shown to hold his own against beings with powers. He is also skilled at using the objects in his environment to gain an advantage in a fight.
Despite his age, Max has incredible reflexes. He frequently dodges enemy attacks.
