Marigold is a short poem written for the 2020 Spring Fanon Con Creative Writing Contest. It serves as the first "episode" of Tech X+.
Poem[]
In a world not of our own,
Trees and hills and valleys grow.
So similar at simple glance,
Illusion born of circumstance.
No man nor beast comes from this world,
But in the winds, the flowers dance.
The marigold, a treasured sight
Her petals grew and saw first light.
But on this world, their golden tint
Was to be feared, as whispers hint:
"The sunlit flow'r, it brings us death,
it wrenches from our lungs our breath,
Grief and woe and sorrowing,
Nothing more shall this one bring."
The marigold,
It should be said,
Had no intent of bringing dread.
She wished to live a happy life,
Not one of woe or grief or strife.
Belief she'd bring all to death's door,
A superstition,
Nothing more.
But superstitions last, you see,
In spite of truth, reality
Oft shares the fate of fantasy.
Decided false and cast aside,
'Tis easier to live in lies.
A superstition,
Nothing more.
A superstition,
Evermore.
Thus with sorrow undeserved,
The marigold, cast out, observed,
The timeless hatred of this people
Recast the roles of "good" and "evil".
Henceforth, the marigold, begrieved,
Packed her things and took her leave.
Deprived of hopes or dreams or worth,
She found a world,
A place called Earth.
Protected by a man of change,
This world provided her a range
Of new emotions, heaven-sent.
All that she knew, broken and rent.
Though nervous and unsure of it,
She felt this new world just may yet
Bring her peace, and with a song,
Prove her birth was never wrong.
The storm had passed,
the rain would soon,
and then at last,
her gold could bloom.
Notes[]
Marigold is a simple poem written primarily in a direct rhyming structure ("I ate an orange, then hit a door hinge," etc.). This rhythm is occasionally broken for the sake of emphasizing certain lines, but it remains an easy read.
