Plot[]
The Tennysons are checking into a fancy hotel in New York City, or more accurately, Gwen was admiring the scenery and Ben was trying to find the nearest Sumo Slammer kiosk while Max was the one checking in.
"Now kids, don't get too worked up, it's only for a day."
"Woah, the new Sumo Slammer video game is in there!" Ben's eyes sparkled as he ran over to a kiosk only to be stopped by a guard.
"Pass?"
"Uh... I'm one of the testers who get to play early?" Ben's right eye twitched for a split second, a tell he was lying.
"VIPs only." The man turned Ben around, the boy slumped over to Gwen and Max.
"I know what you're thinking Ben, don't go sneaking back in there."
"I won't!"
Ben waited for the two to leave, the two still thinking he was going with them while he stood behind, smugly twisting the Omnitrix dial onc he was in a safer spot.
"But I will!" An invisible Ghostfreak flew past the guard, picking up the controller.
The other two Tennysons were inside the elevator, Max paused before pressing the 'up' button, looking behind him.
"Ben?"
The high score of the game came up, Ben, now transformed back to human pumped his fist in the air.
"Yes! New high score! Booyah!"
The guard walked behind him, grabbing him by the shoulder.
"What do ya got to say, kid?"
"Uh... You left your window open?"
Ben, Gwen, and Max are all kicked out of the hotel, the guard tossing them their luggage.
"And stay out!" The guard yelled.
"I don't you not to sneak back there."
"Well, if you want to be technical about it, I didn't go in there."
"I never even got a chance to take a shower, a real shower, this whole summer, Ben!"
The three were in the Rust Bucket, Ben pouting as Max continuing to scold him, Gwen was just grumbling to the side.
"How do you expect me to trust you if you keep doing these pranks with the watch?" Max pinched his nose.
"Maybe the fact that I keep saving you guys and so many other cities? Why can't I use it for me every now and then?"
"It's not about how many times you save someone, Ben. It's why you're doing it."
"It wasn't even that big of a deal!"
"To you it might have been, but you have to think about what you're doing, Ben. So, until then, no more of this 'Sumo Slammer' stuff for two weeks!"
"You guys don't get it! None of this is fair!" Ben tried to force his words out.
"And neither is getting booted from a 4-star hotel I already paid for."
"Can we just... go back in there and see if we left anything?" Gwen spoke up only to be shot down with a glare from Ben.
"Gwen's right, I'll go." Max got up, exiting the RV.
"Who does he think he is, my dad? I save people time and time again and this is the thanks I get?"
"Hello? Earth to Ben? Didn't we just go through this thing with Animo?"
"Well, uh, you see, well, well, that was, that was different, okay!" Ben stormed off, clearly unable to come up with a valid rebuttal.
"Where are you going?"
"Where does it look like? As far away from you two as possible!"
"You know you're going to be so grounded..."
Gwen shadowed Ben as he approached an arcade named "Total Zone". Inside, there was an assortment of kids Ben's age playing on arcade machines, Ben moved to a baseball-batting game. The pitcher leaned back, threw the ball and...
GAME OVER.
"Come on, it just started! Hey! This thing ate my tokens!" Ben yelled to a clearly unenthused employee.
"The sign says... 'play at your own risk'."
"This place is..."
"...A total waste? Yeah, you're right. I get embarrassed to tell my friends I hang out here." A slightly older boy with long, dark hair chimed in.
"Not as bad as his attitude, did you hear that guy?"
The boy chuckled, "Good one, here, it's on the house."
The boy laid his hand on the machine, electricity pulsed from his hand into it as a mountain of gold tokens shot out.
"Woah, how'd you do that?!"
"Let's chalk it up to... skills."
Ben began digging through the mountain, lining his pockets.
"Hey! Those aren't ours!" Gwen dragged herself into the conversation.
"Oh, quit butting in all the time! Hey, I'm Ben by the way." Ben held out his hand.
"Kevin, but you can call me Kev."
"Wanna play some Air Hockey, Kev?"
Kevin looked past Ben and Gwen, noticing two older boys, looking even more 'thuggish' than he did.
"Maybe some other time, gotta jet." Kevin began walking off in the other direction.
"Okay, definitely bad news." Gwen noted.
"Way to judge a book by its cover, Gwen."
The thuggish teenagers approached, pushing Ben and Gwen aside, mimicking Kevin's movements, one had a receding hairline, the other was rather muscular, their presence surprising Kevin.
"Long time, no see. Where're you going, freak? Need somewhere to 'recharge your batteries'?"
Kevin backed up, his eyes widening, the two grabbing him by his arms, about to swing him around when ben stepped forward.
"Need any help? I've got some friends-"
"He's gonna need a lot more than you kid, now beat it!" The stronger teenager stomped at Ben's foot, causing the boy to stumble back.
"Ben, let's just get out of here, he can handle himself." Gwen pulled Ben behind a corner, "Listen, you are not going hero."
However, Ben slammed on the Omnitrix anyway, transforming into Wildmutt.
"Or you can just not listen to me."
"So, how's the hangout? Still trashed like I left it for you?"
"Yeah, and you're gonna pay!" The balding teenager said.
"Cash or credit?" The boy smiled, picking up a battery from his pocket, charging up his hand. He was about to retaliate until Wildmutt climbed over an arcade machine.
"Ugh, what's that dog up to?" The balding boy asked, commanding the stronger bully to get rid of it.
Wildmutt quickly pounced on the two, holding them down, drooling and snarling all over them as they screamed. Picking them up, he tossed them against a wall to knock them out.
Now that it was over, Wildmutt ran out of the building, turning back to Ben safely.
Later, Gwen was still upset with her cousin outside of the arcade.
"I can't believe you went alien out there!"
"He scratched my back, I scratched his."
"Man, did you see what that dog did?" Kevin joined the conversation, walking out of the arcade as well.
"If we keep Grandpa waiting any longer, he's gonna lose it! We've gotta go, now, Ben!"
"Don't you mean, you have to go?"
"Ugh! Fine! You're on your own, hope you're happy." Gwen walked away, sighing while Ben spat on the ground, their spat impressing Kevin.
"You wanna get a tour of the city?"
"Of course!"
The boys are walking and talking through the city as the topic of powers came up.
"So, how'd you get to be able to do all of that?" Ben asked, "The electric stuff."
"Born with it, I'm like an energy sponge. Motors, air conditioners, lights, batteries, whatever I want! Soak it up, dish it out however and whenever I want to."
"Cool!"
"Come on! I can show you my digs."
Gwen finally got back to the Rust Bucket to see Max, clearly disappointed.
"Where's. Ben."
"Yeah, about that..."
Ben and Kevin arrive at a decrepit, abandoned subway station. Some TV and game consoles lying on the floor, an ATM next to an abandoned ticket booth and some old Sumo Slammers posters on the wall.
"You... live like this?"
"Yeah, by myself too!" Kevin was awfully proud of that.
"Not really excited to stick around their 'freak of a son', but that just means I don't have to deal with my jerk of a stepfather."
"What did he do?"
"Supposedly he's a 'responsible guy' when in reality he just sits around and takes out every problem on me and mom."
"And that gang goes after you too?"
"I kinda thrashed their hangout under the 39th Street Bridge. Not the first people to be after me though."
"All I wanted was to sneak by a guard to play the new Sumo Slammer video game and now my family will look me in the eye!"
"Wait, the new one? Like, the one that won't be out until Christmas?"
"Yeah, that one."
"I've got an idea."
Come nighttime, the boys approached a warehouse.
Kevin overloaded the door's keypad and the boys kicked it down. And when they turned the lights on, there were hundreds of wooden crates all marked "Sumo Slammers". Kevin tossed a copy of the new game Ben's way.
"Yeah! You rule, Kev!"
"Yeah, I love me too."
Suddenly, smoke grenades come crashing through the windows of the warehouse, lights from helicopters shone through the window.
"Why are the SWAT after us?!"
"Someone must've gave the anti-freak troop a heads up..." Kevin muttered.
The two started booking it, both of them dropping their copy of the game, making their way to an entrance only to be spotted by a helicopter light, Ben running whilst Kevin got a nearby outlet to charge up.
"Freeze, kid!" Armed SWAT soldiers blocked Ben's path while others looked for Kevin.
Kevin hopped into an empty forklift, setting it to drive by pushing electricity into it.
The forklift sped forward, knocking straight into the soldiers carrying Be, Kevin hopping out before it hit into a wall.
The two began running to the last available exit, finding water, two more police cars on both roads out and a helicopter in the sky awaiting them. They quickly ducked back behind a box.
"We're surrounded, nowhere to go..." Ben panicked.
"WE HAVE YOU SURROUNDED, YOU HAVE NOWHERE TO GO!" The helicopter cops shouted.
"Yeah, thanks for telling us!" Kevin complained, "Now what?"
"I've got one way to figure this out... but can you keep a secret?"
"Course I can! Wait, what are you doing with your watch?"
But this wasn't any ordinary secret, Ben primed the Omnitrix and slammed down, transforming as his arms and body extended, his limbs spreading out for yellow membranes to extend down to connect to his growing tail, finally transforming into Jetray.
Jetray jumped forward, grabbing Kevin with his legs and they busted through the entrance to knock over the guards before flapping into the sky.
"Oh yeah! And people call me a freak! How do you do this stuff?"
"We can talk about it later."
Kevin looked behind, in each of the helicopters chasing them, a soldier was hanging from the side with a gun ready to fire.
"Pigs on your six!" Kevin yelled, Jetray weaved between shots, flying up towards the Statue of Liberty and ducking around the points of the crown meaning the cops couldn't fire, in fear of destroying a national monument giving Jetray enough time to hide somewhere.
"Where'd they go now?"
As the helicopters continued to fly, Jetray hitched a ride on the undercarriage of one. A shooter on a neighboring helicopter noticed this and fired leading to Jetray shooting the gun out of the soldier's hand with a neuroshock before flying towards the city, taking cover in between traffic before landing on a tour bus, catching the attention of the people inside as he climbed to the glass.
One of the people inside pointed at him, yelling, "Hey! It's that manta guy from Washington, and he's got some kid with him! Do something cool, man!"
Jetray waved at the man before doing a flip from the window before flying up, even passing the Rust Bucket as Jetray and Kevin entered Times Square. The choppers weren't going to shoot at them, too many civilians meaning the two could do as they liked.
A reporter is broadcast on the screens, detailing the events as Jetray and Kevin fly in front of the shot, Kevin holding a peace sign, although their fun is short lived because the helicopters, although not shooting, still aren't going to stop pursuing which forced Jetray to dive down.
"Can't shake them!" Jetray yelled, flying, until he noticed a truck hauling multiple cars on the road approaching a bridge as the Omnitrix began to beep, "I've got one last idea!"
Jetray flew just above the truck and while they could fit under the oncoming bridge, the helicopters are forced to lift up as Ben transformed back.
"We'll find 'em on the other side! Wait, where'd it go?"
Ben peeped his head up. He and Kevin sat in one the transported cars, relaxing.
The boys are on the ground, running with the sound of a police siren in the distance They finally stopped to catch their breath in an alley.
"So, that watch turns in you into Stingray whenever you want?"
"First of all, his name is Jetray. Second, it's not just him, it's ten kinds of aliens."
"Wait, so all those guys on the news are you? The dog guy was you?"
"Uh-huh."
"You're the man! What else can you morph into?"
"It's not that simple... It's like it has a mind of its own."
Kevin reached for the still recharging watch, "Gimme it! Maybe I can work it."
"It's stuck to me, it won't come off."
"Well... we should be partners. Fifty fifty, with both of our powers, we can do whatever we want, no pesky adults in our way. Whaddya say? Friends to the end?"
Kevin offered his hand, Ben shook it.
"Friends to the end."
The Rust Bucket continued to drive, Gwen sitting in front with Max, adjusting the radio.
"Of all the stunts Ben's pulled, this has to be the worse, when I find him..."
"He has to have done something worse, right, Grandpa?"
At a subway station, Ben and Kevin hop over the ticket checks coming to an empty railway area where Kevin noticed a light fixture and two tracks on the floor.
"Gimme a boost, gotta get another charge."
Ben helped Kevin up, letting the boy absorb electricity from the light, Kevin then hopped off, running onto the empty tracks to grab a switch, charging it with electricity to shift the rails.
"What are you doing?"
"Money train loaded with cash is set to come down this track, and when it hits the other passenger train, boom! instant jackpot! You get to go hero and get us out of that jam in no time!"
"You can't do this!"
"Uh, hello, I kinda already did! Besides, the goodie two-shoes routine isn't gonna work when you helped me escape a literal SWAT team!" Kevin's hands began to spark again, "Whatever happened to friends to the end?"
"This is the end, friend. Time to go Humungousaur!"
Ben slammed down on the Omnitrix, turning into Ball Weevil.
"Ball Weevil? I asked for 'muscle', not 'miniscule'!"
"Congratulations, your uptight sister of yours taught you big words. Whoop-de-doo..." Kevin snapped his fingers as he approached Ben to knock out all lights in the area but the one above Ball Weevil.
Kevin, in the confusion, shot several blasts of electricity as Ball Weevil flung several balls of plasma, absorbing the electricity and exploding, throwing Kevin back.
"As you can see, I'm not the only one who can absorb energy."
"Well, I can do it better!"
Ball Weevil fired at where he last heard Kevin's voice but he wasn't there, having already gotten behind him, picking him up by the neck.
'Let me... go!"
"Okay." Kevin smiled as he absorbed energy from Ball Weevil before tossing the insect onto the tracks.
As Ben got up, he looked at Kevin, he had changed, on the right side of his face, Ball Weevil's antenna grew out of his forehead while Ball Weevil's arm and leg split out of his normal arm. Meanwhile, Ben too had changed, looking down at his hands, he saw... crystals?
"Chromastone? He must've messed with the watch!" Chromastone stared Kevin down with his singular white eye. "I think I'll take that one too! YOU'RE GOING DOW-!" Kevin started coughing, clutching the ground.
"Uh, are you... okay?"
Kevin looked up after a bit, his eyes now fully changed to become Ball Weevils as his mouth unhinged to fire a stream of plasma at Chromastone to stick him to the floor.
"Never. Felt. Better."
Chromastone looked around, hearing a train horn on his left, the passenger train, and he knew what that meant.
"Aw... crapbaskets."
The cargo train came barreling down that same train track on his right.
"Jackpot." Kevin smirked.
Using the last of his willpower, Chromastone broke from the plasma, firing a rainbow beam to fry the switch, short-circuiting it back to its original posiiton saving the passengers but leaving the money train to go right towards him. Chromastone braced for impact, Chromastone putting his hands out.
"Think of it like... playing goalie.... Tetrax told you that this should be easy..." The train collided with Chromastone head on, sending he two further into the subway leaving Kevin alone.
"Forget the money... I can get some priceless revenge with these kinda powers."
The cargo train continued to speed through the tunnels, Chromastone doing his best to hold it back, digging his feet into the ground which as rather hard to do given the tracks kept bouncing him.
"Don't worry! I've got an idea!" Chromastone said, turning around, his back now to the train, pointing his arms out and up before firing, breaking through the ceiling and pushing the train back, and with enough time, maybe he could stop it.
"-And expect delays on the uptown subway lines near 51st Street. There have been reports of a... mutant in the tunnels?" A radio announcer explained, Gwen and Max looked at each other.
"Do you think?"
"I don't think. I know."
Max spun the Rust Bucket around and drove towards the subway lines.
Chromastone saw the Omnitrix beeping red.
"Oh, come on!"
Chromastone leapt on top of the train, bouncing against the top of the cars until he grabbed onto one to melt through the roof to get a better hold before turning back into Ben who, due to how hot the metal was, let go, flinging him backward until he managed to stand up on the car once they were out of the tunnel, ducking under overhead lines.
There was a horn honking next to him, turning to see the Rust Bucket driving alongside the subway and against traffic, dodging cars.
Inside, Max flips a switch, releasing a tarp as he continues honking at Ben to notice the sign in front of him.
"Alright, alright!" Ben jumped, just in time, being caught perfectly by the tarp.
"Are you ever planning on listing to me None of this would've happened if you obeyed me from the beginning! It's all about trust, Ben."
"Well, trust is a two-way street, Grandpa, and you need to trust me that Kevin's probably misusing my powers as we speak!"
"Okay... sow here is he?" Max tried to calm down.
"I think I know..." Ben began to explain Kevin's whole deal to Max and Gwen.
An explosion came from under the 39th Street bridge, at the thugs' hangout.
"C-Come on, Kevin, we can work this out! When we called you a 'freak', we meant it in a... nice way! Like, you're... freakishly cool!" The stronger kid said, being hung upside down in a green plasma cocoon alongside three other friends who were crying for their lives.
The Rust Bucket was currently stuck in traffic, Max is continuing to honk the horn.
"Come on, move it!"
"Alright, looks like I've gotta run!" Ben slams the Omnitrix, transforming into XLR8 who opened the door, and quickly ran through traffic.
Kevin continued taunting the gang members, until suddenly his extra arm and leg went back into his body and so did his antenna.
"What's... happening to... me..."
XLR8 appeared behind Kevin.
"So, 'friend', how goes the 'cash flow'?"
"If I can get ahold of you, I'll make bank in no time fla-!" Kevin began coughing again, like a cat hacking up a hair ball, it just felt wrong, turning towards the gang members, about to fire a plasma ball until he was kicked out of the way by XLR8 kicking him.
XLR8 held Kevin down with his leg, but Kevin didn't care, he just started laughing as he grabbed XLR8's leg, watching as his legs began to extend, turning blue and making the same wheels to kick XLR8 off of him.
Kevin attempted to quip but found his words incomprehensible, his face had morphed into the shapes made by XLR8's visor, his eyes extending downwards and his mouth closed entirely.
Just like when he first absorbed DNA from one of Ben's aliens, Ben changed too, this time into Humungousaur.
The fact that Kevin had just gotten XLR8's legs meant he had to get used to skating rather than walking, giving Humungousaur time to overpower him, holding him against a wall and roaring in the boy's face as the criminal remained unintimidated and began to rapidly kick Humungousaur in the chin, sending him reeling back. As they continued to trade blows, the Rust Bucket showed up, Max and Gwen hopping out to try and pull the thugs out of their plasma cocoon without triggering an explosion.
Kevin began to get the upper hand, finally figuring out his balance, especially when the Omnitrix was beeping red and Humungousaur couldn't block.
Humungousaur flung his tail around, knocking Kevin into a collumn of the bridge, dropping the rubble on him.
"You give up yet?" Humungousaur snarled as he detransformed.
Kevin began to... whimper? Like a sad puppy, he curled in a ball, unable to speak, unable to cry. He had no mouth, but he had to scream.
"Ben, I think you need to stop... you're hurting him."
"What does it look like he was doing to me? Maybe if you saw what he tried to... Wait, Gwen? I thought that you..."
"Who cares what I thought about him! He's obviously afraid!"
"Alright..." Ben walked over to the still whimpering Kevin, "...Maybe you just went mad with power. But that doesn't matter, you can help me, my grandpa and... I guess Gwen too, kick the bad guy's butts."
Ben pointed to his family, Gwen just rolled her eyes at the comment. He then extended his hand out.
"We can try again, friends to the end. For real this time."
"After what you did... this is the end, friend!" Kevin lunged at Ben, attempting to pry the Omnitrix off causing it to glow green for a few seconds before releasing a large blast, sending Men into Max's arms and Kevin back into the rubble, this time in human form.
"No! No! You took everything from me!" he began running as he heard police sirens.
"Come on Ben, we can talk tomorrow." Max laid a hand on Ben's shoulder.
Tomorrow, the Rust Bucket was up and running on the road, driving out of New York to their next destination.
"Look Ben, I understand that you're sorry, but like you said, trust is a two way street, I can't trust you to trust me if you don't trust me first. You're just going to have to earn that trust back."
Ben lowered his head in guild as Gwen slumped in the passenger seat.
Meanwhile, somewhere in the darkness of the subway, Kevin was walking, kicking an empty can of beans around for his only entertainment until he noticed something, there was a green, slimy film stretching from his tattered shoe to the can and it finally clicked.
"This won't be the last he sees of me..."
Kevin hacked up another ball, kicking it around before tossing it into the sky and letting it explode.
He showed up next at his old home. Knocking on the door. Once. Twice. A young, unkempt woman meekly opened the door. She seemed surprised to see Kevin, but that surprise quickly turned into relief and then became fear as she heard a stomping coming from upstairs, she attempted to shoo him away but Kevin forced himself in.
"Who in the world is knockin' at this hour?!" A gruff male yelled.
"It's..." The woman, Kevin's mother, attempted to answer.
"Was I talking to you, woman?!" Harvey, the stepfather, raised his voice again, holding up his fist.
"Hey! Don't speak to her like that! Not anymore, not ever!"
"Well if it ain't the freak... you think you can waltz back in here after everything you've done and expect us to welcome you back? Your mother's been in tears and you've turned this home into a-!"
Kevin began to laugh, it wasn't that confident villain laughter he did before, it was this hollow, almost pained laughter. As if this was his first time laughing.
"What I've done? every time with you. You could never accept responsibility, you could never accept me as your own son!" Kevin yelled back, a flame brandishing in his right hand.
"You think that just because you're standing up to your old man... that all our problems will just go away? I'm gonna set you straight, once and for all boy..."
Kevin's stepfather rolled up his sleeves, walking down the steps until Kevin sped up to him, holding his face down against the ground, the flames causing his father to scream in agony, but he wasn't the only one screaming. Kevin's voice broke, as cathartic as this was, it hurt. Was the pain physical, or was it mental? Was Ben right? No, he couldn't have been.
His mother kept yelling for him to stop but he kept going until the struggling stopped and he got up, tossing his mom some pickpocketed money and walked out the door.
"You love him so much, why don't you pay his hospital bills?" He asked rhetorically, "Better yet, use it to help pay for a better home."
Kevin continued to walk, his strut turning into a jog, that jog turned into a sprint as he was gone.
