First Appearance The Monster

Gwendolyn "Gwen" Tennyson (born December 27, 1994) is the deuteragonist of Ben 10: Missing Pieces and Ben 10: Protector of the Omniverse. She first appeared in The Monster. She is a human/Anodite hybrid from the planet Earth and a member of Alien Force. She is the Timeline 1 equivalent of the canon Gwen.

Appearance[]

Regular Appearances[]

Human Form[]

In The Monster, 10-year-old Gwen had her original series appearance.

In Crossroads and Up to 11, 15-year-old Gwen had her Alien Force Season 3 appearance.

In Protector of the Omniverse, 19-year-old has her Alien Force Season 3 appearance. However, her shirt is blue, her pants are white and her vest is red, and it is shaped differently, also now having a zipper. She wears a black belt with her signature cat symbol in the middle, colored light pink. She also now has bangs.

Her colors match the color palette of Heroes United.

Anodite Form[]

In Protector of the Omniverse, Gwen's Anodite form has her Alien Force/Ultimate Alien appearance, but she wears clothes, depending on what her human form was wearing before the transformation. Her colors match the color palette of Heroes United.

Occasional Appearances[]

Gwen's Lucky Girl costume has its Alien Force/Ultimate Alien appearance, but with light blue gloves and a light blue belt. Her mask is infused with magic properties, which allows it to conceal her true appearance to anyone other than her closest allies.

Gwen sometimes wears a Plumber suit on missions. While doing so, she lets her hair down.

Personality[]

As a child, Gwen was portrayed as an intelligent, sassy and mature girl who displayed a stubborn, smart-mouthed side, especially when dealing with her cousin, Ben. Her quick thinking and good instincts gave her an edge in dealing with dangerous situations, even without powers. Although she generally acted with more maturity than Ben, she could occasionally be nearly as childish and disruptive as him, as she was shown to enjoy taking Ben down a peg. She could also be pretty easily riled up, particularly if Ben was involved. However, she was consistently shown to be deeply caring and supportive and strongly valued her family, even if she regularly bickered with them. While she initially acted in a supportive role to Ben alongside Max, over the course of the original series, Gwen started taking an interest being a hero herself, and eventually started learning magic.

By her teens, Gwen has become even more mature, caring and sympathetic, and even somewhat soft-spoken. She is less easily annoyed by others, and her relationship with Ben has since become more mutually supportive and affectionate. Gwen has grown to be forgiving and empathetic, even towards her enemies: if she believes they have changed for the better, or if they have the capacity of change. This is most evident with Kevin (who had tried to kill her on two occasions), but also occurred with her archenemy, Hex. By this point, her interest and mastery over magic has only grown, applying her studiousness to gain considerable skill in it in just a few years, despite being entirely self-taught, and has since become an important part of her identity.

Despite being more serious and reasonable than Ben and Kevin (often becoming their voice of reason for the both of them), Gwen is still somewhat hotheaded and can lose control of her mana if angered enough. Additionally, Gwen still retains some of her irritable, sassy traits (though not nearly to the extent of her younger self), and she occasionally enjoys making fun of Ben and Kevin, especially if either of them act immaturely. In spite of apparently maturity and improved relationship with Ben, Gwen still gets openly frustrated with him on occasion.

Deep down, Gwen is an overachiever and feels the need to be as perfect as possible, due in part to her mother Natalie pushing her to her limits as a child. As such, Gwen often keeps busy with various activities to keep herself at her peak.

History[]

Prior to Missing Pieces[]

Gwen went through the same events as her canon equivalent as depicted in the original series and Destroy All Aliens.

Missing Pieces[]

In The Monster, Ben, Gwen and Max met Malware, an incomplete Galvanic Mechamorph accidentally created by Azmuth, who lost his patience and kidnapped Myaxx to complete himself. While Ben, Max and Azmuth headed to Galvan B to save Myaxx and stop Malware, Gwen stayed behind on Galvan Prime to help some Galvan scientists cure a Mechamorph guard that Malware had attacked.

In 2008, Gwen and Max freed a 15-year-old Kevin from the Null Void. Although it is unknown what happened during this event, it explains why Gwen was so quick to trust him in Alien Force.

In 2010, Gwen went through the same events as her canon equivalent as depicted in the first two seasons of Alien Force.

Immediately after War of the Worlds: Part 2, made her relationship with Kevin official.

In Crossroads, Gwen visited Max to tell him that she received a letter of admission to Friedkin University via their Early Entrance Program. She revealed that she had some doubts about accepting the offer. Although Max felt it would be beneficial for her to do so, he made it clear that it was ultimately her decision to make, and expressed that he would support her no matter what. Later that night, Kevin came to her house, and she told him about the offer. He encouraged her to accept the offer and promised that he would not give up on their relationship, even going so far as to say he was going to move away with her. During their conversation, Gwen accidentally let slip that she knew he did not go to school. He was ashamed, but Gwen quickly assured him that she did not think any less of him for not having a formal education. She brought up the possibility of him getting a GED so that he would be able to get a job and pay rent upon moving away, and stated that she would help him study. She suggested taking things one step at a time, explaining that she would fully make her decision after getting some sleep. The next day, she told her parents about the letter.

In Up to 11, Myaxx teleported Ben, Gwen and Kevin to Azmuth's lab after Albedo arrived, armed with a new device named the Antitrix, and demanded that Azmuth restore his original form. Ben fought Albedo while Gwen and Kevin heard the story of how the Galvans built Galvan Mark II after the Highbreed destroyed the original Galvan Prime. Gwen persuaded Azmuth to help Albedo return to his original form, saying that he would do no further harm once he achieved his goal. Azmuth eventually agreed and they interrupted Ben and Albedo's fight to deliver the news. Azmuth explained that he did not have the time or patience to build what was necessary to restore his original form, but he could instead unlock the Galvan sample in the Omnitrix and sync the Antitrix with the Omnitrix so that Albedo would gain access to the sample. Albedo reluctantly agreed and Azmuth did what was necessary. Shortly after Albedo turned into a Galvan, he mutated due to the low-quality components he used to build the Antitrix. Ben tried to cure him with the Omnitrix, but was unsuccessful. Blinded by rage, Albedo started blaming Ben, but Ben quickly defended himself, saying he had nothing to do with his decision to create the Antitrix and that he could still make a better future for himself. Impressed with Ben's wisdom, Azmuth re-unlocked all of Ben's previously-used aliens except for Feedback and left the room with Albedo. Ben expressed that he was going to miss Gwen and Kevin (revealing that Gwen ultimately decided to go to Friedkin), but Gwen said they still had some time before that was going to happen and promised to visit on special occasions. The trio then returned to Earth.

Gwen and Kevin left Bellwood the following January and Gwen decided to adopt her Lucky Girl persona to fight crime in secret.

Powers and Abilities[]

The Spark[]

Gwen's magical powers are of alien descent from her grandmother Verdona, a member of a free-spirited alien race of pure energy beings known as Anodites, from the planet Anodyne. Though she technically did not inherit these powers, she shares a "knack" for mana manipulation, referred to by Verdona as "the spark". This is possibly because Verdona manipulated mana in her human form. Gwen's powers are enhanced when she is given an excess of mana.

Gwen can project mana from her hands, such as in the form of waves and beams.

Gwen's mana beams can phase through the ground.

Gwen can use her mana as a laser to break free of restraints or cut through the ground. She can also do so by firing mana from her eyes as a form of heat vision.

Gwen can create a mana explosion by firing a blast of mana at the ground. If given enough mana, she can send out a burst of it from her hands to achieve the same effect at a greater scale.

When sufficiently angered, Gwen's body can emit mana in the form of electricity.

Gwen can create mana constructs, such as crushing weights, blades, tendrils, throwing discs, and whips as offensive attacks; shields, bubbles, and domes to protect herself and others; bolases, arms and lassoes to grab or throw people or objects; chains to tether herself to others; cuffs, tapes, shackles, walls, and cages to restrain others; and cushions, slides, stepping stones, ramps, and platforms as forms of transport or to allow a safe fall. However, there is a limit to what types of constructs she is capable of creating.

Gwen can modify the mana she has already fired out with precision.

Gwen's mana discs can act as boomerangs.

Gwen's mana bubbles can envelop part of someone's body in addition to their entire body. Using this, she can knock opponents' heads together.

Since Gwen's mana constructs are airtight, she can use them to suffocate someone or put out fires.

Gwen can create a floating orb of mana to use as a light source.

Gwen can enhance her punches by igniting her hands with mana.

Gwen can leave mana discs on the ground to form a trail.

By enveloping a person or object in mana, Gwen can move them around as a form of telekinesis.

Gwen can absorb mana from other living things.

Gwen can levitate by meditating.

Gwen can communicate with others through the mana field.

Gwen can detect someone's mana signature as a form of dowsing, allowing her to track them down by either following their energy trail; detecting the traces of mana that they left on their belongings; or being at one with the cosmic mana. Detecting someone's mana signature also allows her to discern what they are doing at the current moment. If the person being tracked is "losing touch with [them]self", it makes their mana signature weaker and harder to track. Dowsing can also be used to identify someone even if the person in question is deceased.

Gwen can distinguish beings with physical similarities, such as Ben and Albedo, by reading their auras.

Gwen can discern multiple minds inhabiting one body.

Gwen can notice the absence of someone's mana signature.

Gwen can also locate objects.

Gwen can perceive people and events beyond what normal senses would allow.

Gwen possesses telepathy, allowing her to receive telepathic messages through her energy field. She can also display a 3D projection of the sender.

Gwen can erase memories.

Gwen can scan memories, allowing her to obtain information even if it is buried deep in someone's subconscious, including the current location of a person the individual being scanned has encountered.

Gwen can heal others if they have been drained of mana.

Gwen can create portals and dimensional vortexes. One way she can do this is by retracing the energy path from a telepathic message she has received.

By exploiting the incompatibility between mana and high-tech machines, Gwen can send out a wave of mana to intentionally disrupt a nearby piece of high-tech machinery.

Gwen can read objects to figure out how they work.

Gwen can disrupt holograms with her mana.

Gwen can see through dimensional barriers.

Gwen can scan an area to discern if the individuals within it have been placed under a spell, by releasing mana grids.

Anodite Form[]

Gwen can assume her Anodite form, which greatly enhances her existing powers.

Gwen can fly and levitate without meditating.

Gwen can increase her size.

Gwen can astral project.

Gwen can encase someone in a forcefield to force them to their knees.

Gwen can unleash a burst of mana powerful enough to knock back a Tetramand.

Gwen is strong enough to throw a Tetramand over her shoulder.

Gwen is durable enough to withstand being thrown at a stone statue.

Gwen's Anodite powers also increase over time. According to Verdona, it would take 60 or 70 years for Gwen to master her powers.

Magic[]

Due to having a magical aura, Gwen can use magic by casting spells to achieve a specific result. Though she often has to recite the incantation in order to cast a spell, she does not always have to do so, as shown with some teleportation spells.

Gwen's spells seem to react to Gwen's emotional desires, like wanting to embarrass Ben.

Gwen can read several magic languages.

Athletics and Martial Arts[]

Gwen can jump high in the air.

Gwen is highly acrobatic, able to execute a backward somersault in mid-air.

Gwen has enhanced reflexes, allowing her to dodge attacks with ease.

Gwen is a capable gymnast and martial artist. She was part of her school's Jujutsu team when she was 10, and trained in judo for nine years. She also knows savate, karate (enough to have received a black belt at the age of 15), and Taekwondo.

When preferring to use her athletics during fights or when she cannot rely on her powers, she is shown to be highly skilled in hand-to-hand combat.

Gwen can synchronize her martial arts with her mana manipulation abilities.

Other Skills and Abilities[]

Gwen is very intelligent and knowledgeable in a variety of subjects. At the age of 10, she had a 4.2 GPA. At the age of 15, she was able to skip a few grades in high school to attend college at Friedkin University, the best Ivy League college among all the colleges around Bellwood.

Gwen is a computer expert.

Gwen can combine her computer expertise with her knowledge of magic.

Gwen has shown herself to be quite proficient in using weaponry.

Gwen is proficient at driving.

Gwen is seemingly immune to the disconcerting effects of going through a Hyperspace Jump Gate, as while Ben (as Brainstorm), Kevin, and Azmuth were affected and subsequently had to recover from the effects, she was unaffected.

Gwen also does horseback riding, softball, skiing, and cross country.

Equipment[]

In Lucky Girl, Gwen took possession of the Charm of Luck, which innately gave her complete and perfect luck in everything she did. While wearing the charm, any action she took would result in a chain reaction benefiting her original intent, but usually injuring Ben in the process. She destroyed it, along with the other Charms of Bezel, at the end of the episode, preferring to be herself instead of wielding so much power.

In Tough Luck, Gwen obtained the legendary lost Keystone of Bezel, which greatly increased her natural abilities to superhuman levels rather than just affecting her luck.

Gwen owns a spellbook, having obtained it from Charmcaster after switching bodies with her.

Gwen has a Plumber Badge, given to her by Magister Prior Gilhil.

Gwen has a Plumber suit, allowing her to survive in unsuitable environments and granting her increased defense during battles with her opponents. Kevin modified her suit by installing a propulsion unit and neuroshock pulsers.

Gwen owns a protection charm. It can protect her only if she correctly recites the incantation on it.

Weaknesses[]

Gwen's raw mana attacks are useless and ineffective against certain species such as Geochelone Aerios.

Gwen's mana constructs can be tampered with by more powerful Anodites.

Gwen can struggle to determine someone's location in an area riddled with technology. She also cannot track Ectonurites, as they have no mana.

Most of Gwen's Anodite powers can be neutralized by a mana disruption grenade, a power dampening headband, or bracelets used by a member of the Synthroid race.

Gwen can be drained of her energy to the point of either being rendered powerless or death. This can be done by trapping her in runes at midnight and exposing her to moonlight, or placing her in a machine used by the Synthroid race.

Gwen cannot transform into her Anodite form without risking losing her humanity.

Certain intense spells, such as teleportation spells, exhaust Gwen to the point of having to rest and recover, and can even make her faint if she is too physically weak. These spells can even make her faint if she is sick. The distance between her and the location she is teleporting to is a factor to this weakness. Similarly, her spells won't work correctly if she is wearing a hazmat suit.

Gwen has arachnophobia, the fear of spiders. She also has claustrophobia, the fear of tight spaces.

Gwen is vulnerable to being possessed by an Ectonurite.

Gwen is vulnerable to hypnosis.

Gwen can be rendered unconscious by sedative quills, such as those generated by Argit's species.

Gwen can be immobilized by ice.

Gwen can be trapped in an Arachnachimp's webbing. She can also be ensnared by vines generated from Methanosians and Florauna.

Gwen can be rendered unconscious by a Methanosian's sleeping spores.

Gwen can be immobilized by crystallizing attacks.

Gwen is vulnerable to strong winds.

Although her intelligence and knowledge have only increased since her youth, Gwen is not completely free of her naivete, and at times can be arrogant. Gwen can occasionally be too trusting with people who want to exploit her good will, leading her or others into harm's way.

Overall, while Gwen is immensely powerful, she almost always holds back in battle to avoid injuring her opponents to where they can gain the advantage and potentially injure her instead. She is also weaker than her other Anodite relatives.

  • Kevin Levin: Following their departure from Bellwood, Gwen and Kevin are now much more emotionally intimate as they now understand each other on a deeper level. Gwen is supportive of Kevin's endeavors and empathetic towards him, especially when his insecurities get the best of him. Kevin has helped Gwen become slightly more relaxed and often reminds her that, contrary to what Natalie taught her when she was growing up, she does not need to be perfect.
