Plot[]
The episode begins with the setting of Conduit Edwards' death in The Beginning of the End. The Forever Knights had believed that he was killed by Sir George, but he had managed to survive. Edwards had his Esoterica minions take him into a healing facility, undetactable from Ben's team, and the Forever Knights, as he was kept incubating in order to heal.
With the little flashback coming to a close, the scene switches to Ben and Rook sitting down in Burger Shack, with a tower of Chilli Fries, as they were playing a game of Jenga. Rook would concentrate, as Ben would drink from his smoothy cup. Rook successfully takes a fry from the stack, as Ben congratulates him on his lucky round, as Ben would have a turn, focusing as hard as he could, only to get caught off guard, causing the stack to tumble over. Rook would congratulate Ben on his attempt, with Ben claiming that he lost focus. Ben receives a message from Gwen, who said that she was coming home to Bellwood, just for a few days. Excited about the news, Ben messaged back, showing his excitement with his reply in all caps. Gwen replied back with a photo of her and Kevin, as Ben would take a photo of him and Rook, writing about Rook being his new partner. Gwen replies back a second later that she's on her way, as Ben would wait for them both, as he asked Rook if he wanted to play Eye Spy. Ben goes first, saying the letter s, to which Rook guesses the sky, as Ben smiles, telling him that it's his turn. Rook says the letter f, to which Ben began to think.
Gwen and Kevin arrive later on in Kevin's car, opening the doors, with Gwen rushing to give Ben a hug. Ben hugs her back, telling her that he's so happy to see them both again. Gwen tells Ben about her courses, and how she is doing well in them. Ben asks her about anything that goes on in college, as she tells him that she does drama with Professor Aniceto, and some classes with Hex. Ben asked about Hex's sudden career change, as Gwen informed him that Hex turned a new leaf, and decided that he wanted to become a teacher. Gwen also says that she's staying for a few days, and would love to get back into her hero duties.
Ben claims he'd love to do so too, but would like to head home and get some rest, as Gwen would say that she'd see him tomorrow. Ben goes into Rook's Proto-TRUK with him, while Gwen and Kevin get back into the car, before driving off to Gwen's house and drop her off.
The next scene opens to Gwen in her bedroom, flicking through her books, until she receives a pounding headache. Gwen brushes it off as just a little migraine, as she would head downstairs to grab herself a glass of water. Her parents were in the kitchen, doing the dishes, as Gwen would wave, before asking about their days. Natalie said she went to do the groceries, while Frank was visiting family. Gwen tells them that she is doing well in her classes, as they ask about Kevin, to which she responds to the question by saying that he's doing okay.
Suddenly, Gwen's headache started to worsen. Gwen could feel her head pounding, feeling a little lightheaded, crashing onto the kitchen side, knowing over the fruit bowl, as her eyes turned fully green. She was fully under the Lucubra's control, as she would attack her family by throwing mana disks in their direction. Natalie would flee from the scene, as Frank would strike back. Frank would throw a pan at her direction, before she grabs it and throws it back at him. The pan smacks his face as he would tremble on his feet. Gwen teleports away from the house, as Natalie grew worried about her daughter, who was in the Lucubra's possession.
The scene switches to Ben sleeping in his bedroom, snoring away, as the digital clock showed the time as 3:00 in the morning. He is woken up to a loud crashing sound, as he looks out his wondow, finding Gwen causing the rucus. He notices the fully green eyes, as he transforms into Water Hazard, opens his bedroom window and jumps out, catching Gwen's attention. Gwen would eject mana blasts prom her hands, as Water Hazard would protect himself by forming a bubble shield for protection. Water Hazard would fire back at Gwen, who casts a spell that turns the water into solid ice. The Orishan disposes of the shield as he exiles it as another hydrokinetic blasts, that hits Gwen in the face. By then, Gwen snaps out of the hypnosis, finding Ben as Water Hazard in front of her, asking him about what happened. Water Hazard transforms back into Ben, who tells her that she went a little crazy. Gwen reveals to him that she's been getting headaches, to which Ben recalls seeing Gwen with the green eyes. Putting two and two together, Ben suspects that the Flame Keepers' Circle is back, however he was confused as to how that seemed to be the case. Ben asks Gwen if she should let Max keep her contained, as Gwen nods, hoping that the Plumbers could help her in this condition.
The scene transitions to Ben and Gwen inside Plumber HQ, where Max was keeping a close eye on the prisoners. He turns around as sees the two, with Ben asking Max about Gwen's condiction with the Lucubra. Max suggests Blukic and Driba's help, since they'd be able to neutralise the hypnosis for a good few hours. The two Galvan arrive to take Gwen into a testing facility to treat any sorts of problems. Rook exits his chambers as he finds Ben and Max, including Gwen being taken by Blukic and Driba, with Rook asking about her. Ben reveals what happened to Gwen, giving him information about the Lucubras, along with the sinister cult. Rook is suddenly smacked from behind, where a few Esotericas are seen entering the scene by hopping in and out of dimensions. Ben informs Rook about the Esoterica, as he transforms into Clockwork. The Esoterica begin fighting them, shifting in and out of dimensions, before Clockwork slows down time, beginning his work. The Chronosapien grabs hold of an Esoterica, as he threw it at a group of them. In Rook's perspective, Clockwork seemed to be moving at a fast pace. Returning the speed to normal, the Esoterica smacks into the group of Esotericas, as they'd hop out of dimensions, hitting Rook again, who was not used to seeing them.
As soon as Clockwork was going to strike again, the Esoterica began to leave the scene, as their ambush was already successful. Clockwork transforms back into Ben, asking Rook if he's okay, to which Rook nods. He confirms that he is unfamiliar with the Esoterica, as Ben mentions to him that they're an old threat he had to deal with. Rook goes back to sleeping in his chambers, as Ben would head back home and go to sleep, before receiving a letter from another old villain. The letter was written and signed by Joseph Chadwick, who wishes to team up with Ben and Rook, after hearing about the Esoterica. Disinterested, Ben chucks away the letter, as he heads inside the house, unknowingly being spied on by Sir Morton, the Twin Knights and the Forever Ninja.
Ben wakes up, as he is shocked to find himself, and Rook, inside the castle of Joseph Chadwick, who enters the scene, explaining that he had a plan for the both of them to do. Rook is confused about the Forever Knights, who Ben gets Joseph Chadwick to explain. After explaining the origin, and their purpose, Chadwick would suggest them to team up, as Ben declines, telling him that he doesn't trust the Forever Knights at all, recalling past memories of where Ben had to go against them over and over again. Chadwick informs him that it'd be different this time, as he agrees that they all need to take down the Flame Keepers' Circle, and presumably, the Dagon. Ben eventually accepts the teamup, as he'd ask about the plan. Chadwick would ask Ben to use any alien to spy on the cult, as Rook and the Forever Knights would infultrate the area if it's safe. Ben goes along with the idea, dialling the Omnitrix, transforming into Chamalien.
The scene transitions to the heality facility Conduit Edwards was inside. He had fully healed to his maximum capacity, as he begins to set everything back into motion. He wishes to go for the ones closer to Ben, after being told that he was still active in his hero duties. Edwards plans to resurrect the Dagon, and take over the world. Using the Lucubras, the Esoterica begin their next ambush, with Edwards tagging along. Little did they know, Chamalien had been spying on them, finding out that Conduit Edwards is still alive. He instructs Rook and the Forever Knights to enter the facility, and investigate the area while the villains do their handywork. Rook enters the facility along with Joseph Chadwick and the others, finding a healing pod, among other things. Chamalien jumps down from the ceiling as he transforms back into Ben, informing them about Conduit Edwards and how he is still alive. Chadwick tells Ben that it is a little obvious, since the Esoterica are still active. Rook is tasked to disable the healing tank, while Ben is instructed to keep an eye out of the cult in case they return. Ben dials the Omnitrix as he transforms into Eye Guy, heading out of the facility and watching on the roof.
Rook successfully disables the tank, as Chadwick calls for Ben to come back down, so they could escape. Eye Guy drops down, informing them that there were no signs on the Esoterica anywhere. Suddenly, the Esoterica and Conduit Edwards hop back into the dimensions, surrounding them, with Edwards mocking them for their cowardice. Eye Guy makes a quick pun, telling them that he should've seen it coming. Edwards commands the Esoterica to attack, while Eye Guy switches into Big Chill in order to freeze them whilst they're hopping between dimensions. Conduit Edwards uses this as a divertion in order to escape, as Rook and the Forever Ninja would charge after him. Sir Morton, Chadwick and the Twin Knights would fend off the other Esoterica, as Big Chill would swoop in and freeze the Esoterica who would attempt to hop out of the dimensions, this plan worked, managing to encase some in an ice mold. Rook and the Forever Ninja jump at Conduit Edwards, who says that the filthy ginger is already getting ready to reopen the casing that kept the Dagon inside. Rook realises that Gwen was who he was refering to, telling Ben that Gwen is about to reopen the casing. Big Chill continues freezing some Esoterica as he tells Rook that he'll go and find her. Big Chill leaves the scene in search for his possessed cousin.
The scene transitions to a possessed Gwen attempting to reopen the casing that kept the Dagon inside. Big Chill swoops in and tells Gwen to snap out of it, only to get attacked by Gwen, saying that she has to do what must be done. Gwen would successfully crack open the casing, as Dagon forms as a huge squid diety, just before Big Chill transforms back into Ben, with the episode ending on Dagon laughing maniacally, thanking Gwen for opening the casing he was trapped in.

Trivia[]
- This episode retcons a few things from Ultimate Alien's canon:
- The cult, named The Flame Keepers' Circle, despite officially dying, is still going around, but only as a few fragments, hence the episode name.
- Conduit Edwards is still alive. Despite his on-screen death in Ultimate Alien, he managed to survive getting stabbed by his minions taking him into a healing facility.
- The scene where Ben and Rook are playing Jenga in Burger Shack is based on the first scene of the Omniverse episode Something Zombozo This Way Comes.
- It is implied that Gwen receives headaches whenever the Lucubras are active. Since they haven't been active since The Ultimate Enemy: Part 2, Gwen no longer had to experience those headaches.
