Plot[]

Beep. Beep. Beep.

“Your total is… $1,227.05.”

“Over a grand for some bags????”

“Sir, you are purchasing six of our 200 dollar bags. That would be around 1.2k with tax.”

“That’s bullshit, get me your manager.”

A disgruntled sigh left the lungs of the cashier as he turned around. As he got to the backrooms, he mouthed yelling at the customer as he flipped a middle finger at the floor. He swung a door open as he stared his manager in the face. The manager wiped his face in frustration.

“What is it now, Dalton?”

“Register 11 wants to talk to you about our prices,” Dalton relayed to his boss.

“What? Why…. whatever…” the manager grumbled as he got up to assist the guest.

“Go ahead and go home for the day,” the manager added as he left the room.

Dalton nodded and started to head home. On his way out the sounds of laughter and screams were heard. Families having a wonderful time and making memories together. As Dalton heard the joy he sighed as he got on his bus home.

-

Dalton opened the front door of a house as an eerie silence filled the abode. Boxes were packed and crowded the entry way. As he passed by rooms and up the stairs, the emptiness of the rooms brought a tear to his eye. He opened up the ladder to the attic as the ladder fell in front of him. With a deep breath he ascended into the dark unknown, it was the last room he needed to clear.

In the attic there were boxes labeled ‘Dad’s Stuff’ and others with ‘Joseph’s Summer Clothes’. Dalton opened one of the boxes and found a baby picture of himself. His dad was carrying him with his grandfather in the frame as well. His dad looked just like him and his grandad was wearing a godawful Hawaiian shirt.

“It would have been great to know you, Grandpa…. First dad lost you at my age and now me ....” Dalton choked out.

As he got up to get music to start the process, his foot hit a stack of boxes as the top one spilt its contents onto the attic floor. It contained a little disc and a pod capsule thing. Confused, Dalton picked up the disc first. He tapped it once as it lit up a hologram and started playing.

“What the….”

“Hi,Son. I know our relationship wasn’t the best and I blame myself for that. Before you were born I was involved in extraterrestrial activity for work. On these adventures I met alien friends, one of which entrusted me with a watch. I’m not sure what it is, but it’s very important which is why I’m entrusting it to you. I’ve been called back into service again. Hopefully for the last time. Max Out.” the old man explained, his tone aggressive at the end.

The hologram message died out as the dark room came back as Dalton dropped the disc in disbelief. He tapped the disc again and again, rewatching it over. His grandfather? Aliens? How was his dad involved? Did his dad even know?

A watch? What the hell is an alien watch even going to look like? Dalton looked in the book further and found nothing unordinary, until he noticed the pod and rolled a bit away from him while he watched the hologram. He picked up the pod as it emitted a green light scanning Dalton.

“DNA Signature Match acquired. Capsule is now unlocked,” the pod spoke.

Dalton backed up in fear as the pod opened up with a green light. Inside, a weird looking watch awaited. Its face had a green hourglass while its general shape was kinda clunky.

“I- how-” Dalton failed to form a coherent sentence.

Dalton reached into the pod with his right hand as the watch jumped up, clamping to his wrist. Dalton panicked and stumbled back, falling down the ladder onto the floor below on his back.

A groan of pain released itself from his mouth, he slowly recovered back to his feet to inspect the watch. He tapped it like the disc only for nothing to happen. He noticed a button and pressed it. The hourglass changed shapes into a diamond as the core popped up. A black silhouette of a fishman appeared.

“What the hell is this?”

Dalton turned the core out of curiosity. It changed from a fishman to a ghost then to a frog before landing on a lizard. Dalton thought for a minute trying to figure out what these icons could mean. There was only one way to know for sure. He pressed down on the watch as a massive green light engulfed him, transforming him into something greater.

Dalton’s skin turned pale blue with fins poking out of his back. Gills formed on his neck with a tail sprouting as he got on all fours. Sharp teeth replaced his own human teeth. When the flash of light died down, Dalton found himself transformed into some type of reptile.

“Holy shit. This is the coolest and scariest thing ever. How did it do this? How do I change back?” Dalton spoke as his icy breath escaped his mouth.

“I can see my breath? I wonder…”

He scuttled out of his house into the backyard, taking a quick look around to be sure no one was near. Once it was clear, Dalton let out a breath of air as an ice beam came out from it. A smile formed on his scaly skin.

He scurried into the woods to play around with this new ability.

-

Deep underwater a sunken ship roared to life. A capsule unlocked as a weird white skeleton humanoid woke up. He walked over to a console and started typing away.

“The Omnimatrix is back in the fold. The Master will be pleased to hear that, more pleased once I retrieve it for him.”

Three droids were built behind him by the ship. They bowed before him as he snapped his fingers at them.

“Go. Bring back the Omnimatrix.”

The droids combined into one with two inserting themselves into the shoulders of the third. They went into a chute and up into the water disappearing.

-

Dalton was having a blast blasting trees with his ice breath. He figured out he could move faster while sliding on the ice which allowed movement in the woods to be a lot of fun, until he smacked into something cool and metal.

He had run into a flying saucer robot, its red eye was scanning when it noticed the watch on Dalton’s shoulder. The eye lit up as an arm started to fire at Dalton who panicked and started to run off back home.

Another drone cut him off as the one behind him caught up. Dalton looked at them scared and confused.

“Guessing you two… clankers are after the watch thing?”

Dalton beamed boosted himself into the air and landed on the drone in front. The second drone started to attack as the first drone tried to defend itself. The two started fighting each other as Dalton jumped up and fired his ice beam, freezing them solid. When Dalton landed, a flash of red light transformed him back into a human. He dusted his pants off and examined his body.

“That was awesome! Those drones were so ass!”

A smile so massive that you wouldn’t be able to tell this was the same Dalton from just thirty minutes ago. He returned to his home and to the attic, while the smile shrunk it was still present as the rest of the boxes were cleared out.

That night as he was about to go to bed, an alarm screeched from his phone. The alert declared a citywide evacuation as a threat was downtown.

“What? Why did they not clarify what the threat was?”

Dalton grabbed his remote and turned on his television to the news station. A man in his mid to late 40s with a hideous mustache and dark blue suit was looking frightened.

“..... these are photos from the aforementioned downtown attack that is the cause for citywide evacuations. Please get yourself somewhere safe, this is Will Harangue from the Daily Bell sig-”

The signal went dead, but before it did Dalton saw a giant fifty foot robot attacking downtown. It was similar to the ones that attacked him in the woods. Dalton wondered if he’d be able to help or even beat it. It was his fault it was even here to begin with. Maybe he could do something.

He activated the watch once again, scrolling through all ten options he had. What could any of them do outside of the freeze lizard? A gamble was taken as the room was taken over by a green flash of light.

White rocks broke out of the watch as it grew up Dalton’s arm. Boulders formed on his shoulders with his eyebrows morphing into one. His skin cracked and peeled away revealing a stony texture with his hands becoming clawed.

“So a rock thing…. Probably super strength, but hopefully something else?”

Dalton made his way outside, damaging doors and their frames on the way. Once outside, he placed his hand on the ground and breathed.

“This might be wrong, but I always wanted to try this..”

The ground raised itself as it became a wave to propel Dalton forward. Dalton cracked a smile as he headed downtown for the robot.

-

People were fleeing in mass still when Dalton arrived downtown. He hopped off his wave as he stood between the people and the robot.

“Hey metalhead! Pick on someone your own… uh size…. That one doesn’t work here. You are like five times my size…. Shit,” Dalton sputtered out.

Onlookers saw this new rocky creature standing up to the robot and were surprised. Their sense of normalcy has just had two back to back blows. Some took pictures as the flashes distracted Dalton who was smacked into a wall by a robot.

Dalton responded by grabbing a chunk of the road and throwing it at the massive mech. It barely dented the thing as Dalton looked annoyed.

“Okay… fifty feet tall, probably harder to move long distances. From the looks of the machine being humanoid, a headshot would be the best. How the hell do I strike its head?”

With his rocky abilities, Dalton attempted to slingshot himself into the air, but failed to get the needed height to the robot’s head. The robot flung their hand back as it swung at Dalton who braced for impact in response.

Dalton was smacked once again, this time flying several blocks down to the local park. He looked around as an idea formed in his head. The robot soon followed him over and fired a laser beam at him. Dalton tanked it and began rubbing his hands together for an attack.

A tremor occurred, shaking the surrounding area. A fissure appeared in the park as the robot fell into it Dalton smiled as he launched himself into the air. He sharpened his feet as he came on the downfall. With a pierce to the dome, the lights from the eyes died with the limbs going limp underground. A shit eating grin formed on Dalton’s gravely face. His first real battle was successful.

-

Dalton laid on his bed inside his otherwise empty room just staring at the watch on his right wrist. He smiled at it as a spark of joy and hope returned to his eye. The weight of his body shifted up as he grabbed his laptop out of a bag that was under his bed. He opened up and went to a community college website as he applied for classes.

“This is the beginning of something amazing.”

-

“Hm… seems some adjustments will need to be made.” Psyphonn muttered before falling to the floor in pain.

A covered tube with a single small cut viewing window rolled into the room with Psyphonn. The window lit up as a voice was heard.

“Psyphonn”

Ice to Meet Our Hero by Kristen Karnell

Since the attack on the downtown area two weeks ago, more and more people have claimed to see mysterious heroes. No one knows where these heroes are coming from, but we have our first official image of one of them.

This image was obtained when the hero appeared to save people from a burning building on 39th Street after it caught fire from unknown reasons. The people were saved by the lizard hero that from our sources is said to have ice based abilities, causing the general public to name him ‘Blizard’.

While the image is of poor quality, we can see that this hero is a quadrupedal blue reptile. While the finer details cannot be made out, it would seem the public consensus for his name would be accurate.

Who are these heroes and where are they coming from? I’m on a mission to find out and reveal the truth behind it all.

Fishy Business by Jimmy Jones

Jonah Melville, CEO and founder of Friends of Fish, faces criminal charges due to illegal animal trafficking. Melville had been illegally diving into Lake Bellwood in order to steal rare fish eggs, which greatly upset the ecosystem. This caused irregular behavior in the species of the lake, leading to attacks on humans.

While there have been rumors of a Krakken existing in our lake, there had been no hard evidence until recently when a fish man emerged from the lake to fend off Melville. With no solid pictures of said fish man, people are speculating if it's the mate of the Krakken or one of its offspring. With the emergence of ‘Blizard’ and other rumored monster heroes, the believability of a Krakken existing in our lake might be a real possibility that we as a city will need to adjust to.

With Melville arrested awaiting trial, Friends of Fish was bought out by Carl Nesmith of the Nesmith Corporation. Nesmith had been attempting to buy FOF for years, what this means going forward is yet to be seen.

Trivia[]

  • Dial H for Hero was chosen as the title as a reference to one of the inspirations for Ben 10 when it was still in production prior to OS.
  • The total being $1,227.05 is a reference to the air date of And Then There Were 10
  • Register 11 is a double reference the main being this is the 11th version of a series/project for me and of course Kevin 11
