Voice Actor | Yuri Lowenthal |
First Appearance | And Then There Was Fen |
Benjamin Kirby "Ben" Tennyson is a main character in Fen 10: The Kids Are Alright as Fen's father and Rook's husband. He is known as Slayer Ben from the Slayer Dimension after he killed Vilgax when he was nineteen. It greatly affected his mental health, which declined further after his Grandpa Max's death. He was doing better for several years until his son suddenly decided he wanted to be a hero just like Ben, reopening some old wounds for Ben.
Appearance[]
35-year-old Ben is 5'10 with shorter hair than he had in Omniverse and more muscle mass than he had as a teenager. The Omnitrix is still on his left wrist. He wears a black t-shirt with "10" on the front and a green jean jacket. He also wears brown pants and white and green shoes.
Personality[]
Initially cocky, childish, and selfish, Ben's immaturity and attention-seeking behavior often led him to joke around, regardless of the situation. When he was 10 years old, he often used the Omnitrix improperly in order to benefit himself instead of actually helping others, such as using Grey Matter to search cereal boxes for a gold Sumo Slammer card. His allies often criticized his attitude, unaware of the fact that he used humor to mask his fears. It was also implied that, on some level, Ben helped people to get rewards and for the thrill of being a hero, rather than because it was the right thing to do. Despite some childish attitude, Ben was heroic, caring and generally good-natured, always willing to save others at any time even at the risk of himself.
Over the years, Ben has displayed good leadership skills, as well as the ability to adapt his attitude to a situation, becoming serious when it's called for. He became more mature, responsible and sensible.
However, when Ben fails to save someone, or if people get hurt because of it, he becomes angry and much more violent. Perhaps the most notable of these instances is when Kevin willingly mutated himself to stop Aggregor, Ben was determined to kill Kevin, even fighting Gwendolyn when she refused to help him. During the episode, Ben confessed to Max that he felt guilty for letting fame get into his head and claimed that he was trying to act more mature for once. He also threatened to hunt down and destroy the Forever Knights if Driscoll did not promise to cease hunting down aliens, which he eventually followed through on against Joseph Chadwick.
Though often stated to be silly or unintelligent because of his former immaturity, Ben is cunning and resourceful when needed, quickly adapting when the Omnitrix doesn't provide him with the alien he wanted.
In Omniverse, Ben started thinking of himself as more of a superhero than a Plumber, often remarking that he's not a cop, but a superhero.
During the war against Vilgax, Ben betrayed many of his defining traits when he killed Vilgax. He would not have been driven to that decision if he didn't believe everyone he knew and loved had been killed in a trick by Vilgax. It is clear this was a momentary lapse in Ben's judgment when he became afraid of himself for what he had done.
After the war, Ben was a very closed off and volatile person. He did not want to interact with anyone and had constant nightmares. He returned to a portion of who he was before after some intervention from Max, but Max's later death pushed Ben back into the habit of secluding himself.
As of Fen 10: The Kids Are Alright, Ben is a mostly serious person. He is a bit distant from others at times. As evident with Charmcaster, he now refuses to believe some people are capable of change, viewing Charmcaster as one of them. While he didn't change his mind, he did eventually accept that everyone disagreed with him and he wasn't going to stop her from leaving.
He seems to have loosened up on this belief not long after, since he relented when it came to Albedo and agreed to give Albedo a second chance at being a good guy.
He was also very strict on not wanting his son, Fen, involved in hero business, even getting into arguments with Fen about it. He was willing to let a few cases slide however, such as Fen, Millie, Sven, and Saki sneaking onto a black market trade ship, since he recognized Millie was having a very emotional moment afterwards and Saki of all people was taking responsibility for her part in it. He also didn't mind, and even praised Fen for starting a walk out at school for the sake of a classmate.
If there are any differences between Slayer Ben and Ben Prime, it's that even prior to the war against Vilgax, Slayer Ben was more prone to having outbursts. This is why he didn't let the race finish in The Most Dangerous Game Show before getting fed up and stopping it. However, he also has a record of being slightly more level headed at times than Ben Prime, except when he was ten.
History[]
Ben 10 and Omniverse Flashbacks[]
The events of Slayer Ben's life during the Original Series and Omniverse flashbacks are the same as his Prime counterpart.
Alien Force, Ultimate Alien, and Omniverse[]
This version of Ben did not experience the events of Paradox, Heroes United, Ben 10,000 Returns, Ben Again, Animo Crackers, And Then There Were None, And Then There Was Ben, It's a Mad, Mad, Mad Ben World: Part 1, It's a Mad, Mad, Mad Ben World: Part 2, Let's Do The Time War Again, The End of an Era, and A New Dawn.
In place of Ben 10,000 Returns, Ben deals with a different situation involving a separate Ben 10,000.
During the events of Store 23, Slayer Ben entered Dimension 216 and met Gwen 16.
During the events of Fight at the Museum, the power went out, locking everyone inside with a thief, but Ben, Rook, Ester, and Kai teamed up to figure out how to get it back on and apprehend the thief.
In place of both parts of It's a Mad, Mad, Mad Ben World, Ben joined forces with Gwen 16 and an older Race Against Time Ben to stop one of Eon's evil plans. This was the first time Ben met Eon, Professor Paradox, and learned that he was not Ben Prime. Paradox told him that he wouldn't be able to live up to the legacy of Ben Prime.
Slayer Ben did not encounter Skurd in Stuck on You and did not have access to Skurd's ability throughout season 8. During that time, he solved issues that Ben Prime used Skurd for by other means.
During The Secret of Dos Santos, Ben, Rook, and Kai discovered the secret of the Temple of the Sky was simply Ujin's lab and some of his projects, such as the Temple Guardians. Satisfied with the somewhat boring truth, they left Ujin so he could return to his work.
During The Most Dangerous Game Show, Ben broke out of the chair and stopped the show during the final round's race. He teamed up with Ester and Kai to free the other girls from the Null Void and then announced to the cameras that he was calling off dating girls forever.
In place of The End of an Era and A New Dawn, Ben, along with Rook, Gwen, Kevin, Max, Ester, Kai, and (accidentally) Argit aided the Ben 10,000 he met in Ultimate Alien in stopping a new version of the Negative 10 from taking over his timeline.
Post-Omniverse[]
For his 18th birthday, Azmuth unlocked master control on the Omnitrix for him.
Ben and Rook took on a mission for the Plumbers to stop a war on a planet in the Andromeda galaxy. The mission ended in a failure and Ben called off handling heavy political issues from then on. The mission also led to Ben branching away from taking orders from the Plumbers and he instead started taking requests directly from people who wanted his help. As a result, he began working more closely with groups like the Galactic Enforcers.
When Max mentioned some problems with the Plumber base due to parts being outdated, Ben called up Eddie Grand Smith and suggested Eddie be hired as an architect to handle the job. This led to the eventual creation of the Dugway research facility and Undertown expansions headed by Eddie.
Ben fought against Joseph Chadwick and Sir Morton when they ended up resurfacing, but their defeat by Ben was the final nail in the coffin for the Forever Knights and they never reappeared again.
Ben was one of the leaders in the war against Vilgax. When he believed Vilgax killed everyone he knew and loved, he ended up killing Vilgax. This resulted in a major decline in Ben's mental health. He shut himself off from everyone until Max dragged him on a road trip that was reminiscent of their road trip during the Original Series. He returned in a much better mental state.
Ben and Rook eventually started dating and had a son named Fenrick together. Ben learned that his constant use of the Omnitrix has a permanent effect on his body, allowing such a thing to be possible for him, albeit incredibly unlikely to actually happen. He stayed on Galvan Prime under Azmuth's care for the final two months and the first month after.
Ben scared off Ester's boyfriend at the time for refusing to step up as a father, causing a rift between him and Ester for a few weeks before the two reconciled and she agreed she didn't need that guy anyway.
Ben and Rook got married. Ben and Lucy danced together at the wedding. He later attended Gwendolyn and Kevin's wedding with Rook.
Ben and Rook moved into a suburb not far from his parents.
Four years later Max passed away and Ben returned to the mental state he had after the war against Vilgax. He shut everyone out and remained that way for several years. It was a slow process in his eventual return to being somewhat back to himself.
Fen 10: The Kids Are Alright[]
Ben first appeared in And Then There Was Fen, watching the news and spotting Sven on screen. After getting a call from Molly to request his help, he realized the alien carrying Sven had to be Fen. He and Rook went into town to stop the boys. Ben helped Fen transform back into himself and he and Rook took Fen to Galvan Prime. He complained to Azmuth about not being told Fen could transform into aliens on his own. Azmuth told Ben he had no reason to believe it was possible before and didn't see any issues related to it now. Despite being a bit annoyed at Azmuth's lack of help, Ben and Rook took Fen back home.
On the way home, Fen said he wanted to use his new power to become a hero like Ben, but Ben was adamantly against it. His concerns about Fen putting himself in danger like Ben had done all his life caused him to have trouble sleeping that night.
During And Then There Was Sven: Part 1, Ben was woken up by a call from Gwendolyn. She told him Charmcaster had escaped and she asked Ben to look for her. Ben agreed and he and Rook searched Undertown for any trace of Charmcaster. They ran into Zed and Ben as Wildmutt followed her.
In And Then There Was Sven: Part 2, Ben and Rook found Sven after being led to him by Zed. Sven reluctantly revealed that he and Fen were looking for Charmcaster as well and that Fen went to The Black Hole in search of her. Ben, Rook, Sven, and Zed drove there in the Proto-TRUK, but found Charmcaster along the way in the middle of trying to kill Fen and Miracle-M. Ben called Gwendolyn to let her know they found Charmcaster before following Charmcaster to the surface.
Ben went after her as Big Chill and argued with Fen about whether she should be apprehended or let go. Ben rescued Miracle-M as Ghostfreak before Gwendolyn finally showed up and Charmcaster. Realizing everyone but him was willing to let Charmcaster go, Ben relented and decided to go along with everyone else. He argued with Fen about his son's reckless actions, but Rook interrupted them. Ben called Molly to have the Plumbers come clean up the mess in Bellwood.
In The Incident, Ben accompanied Ester on her errands in Undertown. When Bubble Helmet tried to rob her, Ben used Buzzshock to stop him. Ben and Ester were then ambushed by Bevel in an attempt to kill him. They both successfully fought Bevel off.
In Chats Don't Last Long Enough, Ben returned home while Fen and Rook were going through the family photo album. He watched Fen immediately run up to his room, realizing his son was still mad at him. He informed Rook about the Necrofriggian that attacked him in Undertown.
Powers and Abilities[]
Ben is a crafty, intelligent fighter, having been trained in savate and karate by Gwendolyn. He also knows Marquess of Queensbury boxing. He uses freestyle fighting, being able to hold his own against Pierce. Max had hinted that Ben is a highly skilled fighter, even as a human.
Ben has also received basic Plumber training, having succeeded in the Plumbers' Academy with a 95 out of a 100. On top of that, he has gained practical experience from various years of fighting aliens.
Ben has good reflexes, being able to easily dodge shots from Manny's blasters before disarming him while in human form, dodge Zed's lunges while the Omnitrix was in Recharge Mode, and a laser blast from Tummyhead.
Ben has an extraordinarily sharp memory, as he was perfectly capable of remembering and writing down the mystic rune-like symbols for entering the inter-dimensional realm of Legerdomain with just one glance from a distance. This is even more true for things that interest him.
Ben is ambidextrous, skillfully wielding tools and weapons in either hand, in human or alien form.
Ben is surprisingly a natural at hoverboard-based combat, which generally requires intensive training and the use of holographic simulators. This is most likely because he can snowboard.
Ben is decent at playing some musical instruments, as he can shred on guitar and was able to keep up with a rock band on drums.
Ben has remarkable pilot skills that function like a combination of playing video games and tap lessons Sandra made him take, but he would never admit it. Despite this, Kevin and Rook are both considered to be better pilots than Ben.
Ben is very good at driving.
It is evident that Ben is smart in some respects, possessing an above-average to high intelligence. Gwendolyn even stated that he really was not working up to his potential at school. He also had surprisingly substantial grades, maintaining a B+ average in his toughest subjects Physics and Chemistry.
Ben has a knack for turning his weaknesses into strengths.
Equipment[]
Ben is the wielder of the Omnitrix (formerly the Ultimatrix and first Omnitrix), which gives him the power to modify his own genetic code in order to turn into various alien creatures. Traditionally, he could only transform into ten aliens at the beginning of both the Original Series and Alien Force, but he later gained additional forms by either unlocking them or by scanning the DNA of aliens he met.
When transforming into an alien, Ben gets all the creature's features, including its appearance, voice, all of its unique and special abilities and powers, strengths and weaknesses. Though he mostly retains his personality, there are some cases where the transformation causes a change in it, like with Rath and Juryrigg.
Though he usually uses his alien forms to fight, he can impersonate aliens as he did with Water Hazard to convince P'andor to go home, though he was only successful at getting P'andor to believe he was Bivalvan.
In addition to the primary transformations and evolutionary function, the Omnitrices and Ultimatrix can both be used for various purposes. Both have a built-in Universal Translator that allows Ben to communicate with most aliens that do not speak English.
The current Omnitrix also has a failsafe to help prevent Ben from dying.
Ben has access to the current Omnitrix's Master Control, allowing him to transform into any alien without touching the Omnitrix. The timeout function does not activate with Master Control either.
Ben's mom gave him back the Mark 10 when he moved out, which he currently uses.
Weaknesses[]
Ben's current mental state is his biggest weakness. He is prone to nightmares and sleepless nights because of it, causing him to be tired far more often than usual. This in turn makes him more likely to run out of patience and have an outburst.
Ben is vulnerable to hypnosis.
Ben has an allergy to peanuts.
Ben has coulrophobia (i.e. a fear of clowns), which was indirectly caused by Max.
Ben is vulnerable to the cold virus.
Ben's worst fear is that of peacocks.
Ben is not immune to Corrodium and will be mutated when exposed to this mineral unless he either wears special protection or transforms into an alien.
Ben can experience pain from electricity, such as that generated by a Nosedeenian.
In addition to gaining the selected alien's powers and strengths, he gains its weaknesses.
Despite his experience in using the Omnitrices and Ultimatrix, Ben still does not know every function of them.
At times, the natural biological behavior of certain aliens can override Ben's behavior, such as Big Chill's reproductive phase or Swampfire's blossoming process.
Any illness Ben is experiencing in his human form will affect his alien forms.
Relationships[]
Rook Blonko[]
In the time between the war on the Andromeda planet that Ben and Rook failed to stop and the war against Vilgax, Ben and Rook stopped working together as partners. They were still best friends and still hung out almost every day however.
After the war against Vilgax, Rook was one of the only people present that didn't get fed up with Ben's behavior after his mental state declined. Instead he tried to be patient with Ben and give him space. Ben's friendship with Rook was one of the last ones he had after he caused a rift between himself and nearly everyone else.
After Ben's trip with Max and his mental state improved, he and Rook developed feelings for each other. Their resulting relationship eventually led to their son, Fen, and marriage.
While Ben and Rook no longer officially work together, they still consider each other partners and Rook often joins Ben on his hero work.
The only trouble their relationship really has is when it comes to differences in how to parent Fen.
Fen Tennyson[]
Ben's relationship with Fen is very complicated since Ben grew distant from everyone after Max died when Fen was four. Fen doesn't have many memories of Ben really engaging in family activities and bonding with him like a normal parent. As a result, Fen grew up feeling like he didn't have much of a parent-child relationship with Ben, that he was just some guy called his dad that lived in the house and sometimes talked to him or gave him adult-y advice.
Their relationship has grown particularly strained since Fen awakened his ability to transform into some of Ben's aliens and expressed wanting to become a superhero like Ben. Ben immediately disapproved of the idea and continuously tried to convince Fen to give up on the idea, but Fen refused, creating a bigger rift between them.
Gwendolyn Levin[]
Ben and Gwendolyn are still very close. They talk often and sometimes assist each other in their heroic activities.
For a while after the war against Vilgax, Gwendolyn refused to talk to Ben because of his behavior. However, they reconciled after Ben got better.
Gwendolyn still greatly trusts Ben, such as when she relied on him to find Charmcaster for her after she escaped in And Then There Sven: Part 1.
Kevin Levin[]
Ben and Kevin are still very close, often visiting each other or going out for drinks together.
They used to butt heads worse than ever before after the war against Vilgax. Kevin couldn't stand Ben's behavior as he didn't have any patience for it. However, they worked things out after Ben got better.
Sven Levin[]
Ben hasn't been seen to have much of a relationship with Sven yet, but they presumably get along fine when interacting.
Jenny Levin[]
Ben hasn't been seen to have much of a relationship with Jenny. She doesn't really want to be around him since she knows lots of crazy stuff always happens in his life.
Carl and Sandra Tennyson[]
Ben has stated that he loves and cares about his mom and dad, and that they're good parents and raised him well enough to become the person he is today.
Just like everyone else, they were worried about his mental state after the war against Vilgax. They are very happy to see him doing better nowadays.
Lucy Mann[]
As kids, Ben and Lucy got along great after Joel and Camille's wedding when they discovered they had many common interests. They talked about shows they both liked and enjoyed teasing Gwendolyn together.
When Lucy was staying with Gwendolyn's family, she and Ben visited each other a lot so they could watch shows together.
After the war against Vilgax, Lucy was one of the many people worried about Ben's mental health, but due to living out of town she wasn't able to be there for him.
The two of them danced together at Ben's wedding.
Ben obviously trusts Lucy a lot since he was willing to place Albedo in her care without any worry.
Ester[]
Ben and Ester are perhaps closer now than they were in Omniverse. She joined Ben in his effort to help one of the Ben 10,000's defeat the alternate Negative 10, solidifying their friendship after their recent breakup.
After the war against Vilgax, Ester was one of the many people worried about Ben's mental health. Him pushing her away at the time caused a strain in their friendship, but after Ben got better they patched up their friendship.
While Ester was pregnant with her daughter, her boyfriend at the time refused to step up as a father. Ben threatened him as a result, but it only scared the boyfriend out of town. Ester was mad at him for a few weeks after that, but when she agreed she didn't need him, she stopped being mad at Ben. They made up in time for Ester to attend Ben and Rook's weddings.
With their kids growing up as friends, they spent a lot of time together so Fen and Millie could hang out. Ester sometimes invites Ben to help her run errands so he can get out of the house.
They make good partners in a fight, as evident when they stopped Bubble Helmet and fought off Bevel together in The Incident.
Julie Boulais[]
In contrast to how they left off their relationship in Omniverse, Ben and Julie grew a lot closer as just friends when they introduced their kids to each other. They were in contact with each other often so Fen and Saki could have playdates together.
When Julie and her family moved to France, their contact ended. Even after they moved back to Bellwood four years later, Ben and Julie didn't talk much since their kids now hated each other.
They chose to start hanging out together more often after Fen and Saki reconciled their differences.
Eddie Grand Smith[]
Eddie considers Ben, as well as Gwendolyn, his first real friends. He was secretly overjoyed when Ben got in contact with him and put his all into his work with the Plumbers just for Ben.
Just like everyone else, he was very worried about Ben's mental state after the war against Vilgax ended, but his work prevented him from being there in person for Ben.
He usually travels down to Bellwood to spend time with Ben whenever he gets a long break from work and always has some new plans to show Ben that he thinks might help Ben's work as a hero. Ben greatly appreciates it, but he thinks Eddie is a little too obsessed with trying to help.
Charmcaster[]
Ben and Charmcaster seem to be on relatively good terms with each other now, all things considered. Their last known interaction was only awkward small talk during the holidays, but when they met again in And Then There Was Sven: Part 2, they casually greeted each other before moving on to trying to fight.
However, Ben did express to Fen that he didn't believe Charmcaster could change and that she should be stopped rather than let go. In the end he didn't exactly change his mind so much as just accept that everyone disagreed with him and he chose to go along with letting her leave.
Once Charmcaster got ready to leave, she thanked not only Gwendolyn and Kevin for meddling in her life, but Ben as well, meaning she views her previous interactions with Ben to ultimately be positive.

Etymology[]
Benjamin is a name from the Hebrew name בִּנְיָמִין (Binyamin) which means "son of the south" or "son of the right hand" going back into the Tanakh (called the Hebrew Bible by Christian scholars), a name of one of the sons of Jacob. His name, "Ben," is to create a rhyming effect between his first name and the number Ten. Also, his surname is a reference to 'Ten' of Ben 10.
His middle name, Kirby, was named as reference to comic book artist Jack Kirby.
Trivia[]
- His voice has noticeably deepened with age, but he is still voiced by Yuri Lowenthal.
- Ben graduated high school early by doing multiple extra credit projects in the middle of his senior year.

- Ben refuses to accept missions that involve too much political business after the last time he and Rook tried to settle a war went horribly wrong.
- He and Rook settled on not changing any last names after getting married since being Ben Tennyson is a huge part of Ben's identity as a hero and Rook always being referred to by his family name would make changing it too awkward.

- Both his and Gwendolyn's birthday is December 27th.
- Ben hates mushrooms, though this may have been a consequence of his ordeal with the Living Mushrooms.
- When Ben was 10, he used to sleep with his teddy bear, called Furry Freddy. However, Ben defended himself saying that Furry Freddy had his own bed, which happened to be right next to his.
- Ben passed the third grade by choosing C for all the answers on multiple-choice tests.

- Ben's favorite drink is smoothies from Mr. Smoothy, despite hating them when he was 11 years old.
- He is still searching for his favorite smoothie flavor. There were a few times where he believed he finally found it, but later reconsidered his judgment. Up until So Long, and Thanks for All the Smoothies, he never tried the same flavor twice.
- Ben had a habit of referring to other members of his aliens' species by the names he gave his aliens because he did not know the names of most of his aliens' species. Over time he grew out of this due to getting the hang of remembering so many different species' names.
- He was often surprised on hearing them, such as when he learned from Hokestar that Bloxx was a Segmentasapien, but never admitted to this.
- Ben has received an honorary doctorate degree from Friedkin University.

- Ben and Gwen once did not speak to each other for two months over an argument about a stick of gum.
- At one point, the arguing between Ben and Gwendolyn had gotten so bad that their parents refused to take vacations together anymore.
- During the road trip in the Original Series:
- Disliking Max's cooking was one of the few things Ben and Gwendolyn agreed on.
- Ben was secretly sorry for what happened to Kevin.
- Ben still had gym clothes from the first grade in his gym locker.
- Sumo Slammers is Ben's favorite game, book, and TV show, followed by Space Pirates.
- He can't stand the next-generation series, Sumo Battlers, because of the relationships it decided to canonize and the way it "replaced good characters and interesting lore with cheap knockoffs". He hates to admit that he dislikes how much Fen likes it. He is at least glad that Fen likes the original Sumo Slammers too.
- Since growing up, Ben has tried to hide how much he still likes Sumo Slammers, but sometimes he can't help but still act like a kid about it. It helps that his son likes the series too so he doesn't look out of place buying merch.
- When he was younger, Ben's high energy often got him into trouble. As he got older, he learned to focus that energy into sports.
